PERJURY DENOUNCED

ARCHBISHOP OF DUBLIN’S PASTORAL SACREDNESS OF OATH EMPHASISED ANTICIPATED ATTITUDE OF REPUBLICANS A pastoral by the Archbishop of Dublin, condemning murder and perjury, has attracted much attention. It is anticipated in Dublin, however, that the elected Republicans will repeat the oath as an empty formula. Bi Telegraph.—Press Association. (Copyright.) London, October 3. The Archbishop of Dublin, iti a pastoral, specially condemns murder and perjury. He says: “He who swears on oath should stand in truth, judgment, and justice, for to call God to witness a lie or a false promise is a terrible outrage on the God of truth.” It is believed that the pastoral is inspired by political events in Ireland recently. (Rec. October 4, 5.5 p.m.) London,’ October 3. “The Times” Dublin correspondent says the Roman Catholic hierarchy’s recent pastoral denouncing perjury has attracted widespread attention, but it is pointed out that it cannot undo the recent elections, at which 411,000 citizens voted for a party which regards the oath of allegiance as an empty formula of no practical importance. This position now affects 57 elected Republicans, who will be required to take the oath next week ns a condition of entering the Dail. It is anticipated that all will repeat the oath as an empty formula. ' Mr. P. Rutledge, a prominent follower of De Valera, in a speech, said his partv demanded peace, and, recognising that Ireland should be master of its own affairs, without interference from outside, the party, refused to recognise the obligations with England as binding.—“ The Times.”
