A well-known Waikato resident lias lately had an opportunity of proving the truth of the old saying that half of the breeding goes iu at the mouth (remarks the “Tinies”). He has been keeping two well-bred Jersey heifers as house cows, and giving them, besides the feed they got iu the paddock, about 31b., each of bran per day. Fed in this way, they were making 141 b of butter per week, besides supplying the family with milk. 'A fortnight ago, thinking that there was now sufficient grass iu the paddock to keep them going, he stopped the bran, and to flu’s surprise the butter yield at once dropped from 141 b. per week to 91b. per week. Even with bran at 40s. per cwt. he found that it paid him well to .give it to the cows, as the yield of butter was much greater and the quality of the milk better. He said he had mentioned the matter to several other farmers, who had tried the experiment of feeding cows with a small quantity of bran in addition to the feed they got in the padclocks, and each reported equally satisfactory results. With cheap fertilisers, herd-testing, and judicious feeding, there is still hope for the dairy farmer. An error in the early surveys of Auckland was brought to light at a meeting of the City Council, when a letter was received from a firm of solicitors in regard to the title of the property of Lewis R. Eady and Sons, Queen Street (states the “Star”). It was stated that the land transfer titles extended for 2 feet beyond the present building into Queen Street. The city engineer (Mr. W. E. Bush) suggested 'that this land should be dedicated as part of Queen Street.
