LADIES’ GOLF TOURNEY

THIRD ROUND OF CHAMPIONSHIP COMPLETED WINS FOR MRS. DODGSHUN AND MRS. WILLIAMS L.CLU. CHALLENGE BOWL WON BY MISS G. SIEFERT “Dominion” Special Service. Palmersfon North, October 3. First-class golf was seen to-day, when the third round of the New Zealand ladies' championship was played. Airs. Dodgshun, Dunedin’s champion, would at present appear to stand excellent chances of annexing the championship title, as she played brilliantly to-day to defeat Mrs. Stout (Wellington), 9 and 7. Mrs. Guy Williams, of Masterton, had a well-earned victory over Miss D. Horton (Titirangi), who on Saturday unexpectedly defeated Miss O. Kay (Dunedin), while Miss V. Upham, the champion of the Miramar Chib, had io submit to defeat at the hands of Miss M. Stevens, who has been playing consistently good golf throughout the tournament.

Miss E. Culling (Auckland) and Mrs. Collinson (Manawatu) are still left in the running for the championship, and should prove dangerous competitors.

All day long perfect weather conditions prevailed, as has' been the case from the beginning of the tournament. Should this prove to be the case to-morrow, some exceptionally interesting contests should be staged, as eight of the very , best golfers in the Dominion are left to fight out the issue of the tournament. NOTES ON THE PLAY AND PLAYERS. Miss D. Horton .Titirangi) stuck tenaciously to Mrs. Guy Williams (Wairarapa) this morning and at the turn was only one down. Mrs. Williams went out in bogey and Miss Horton in two over. Miss Horton had bad luck at Land’s End and thereafter went off considerably, losing 4 and 3. Airs. Guy Williams’s driving was shorter than usual, with the result that both drove fairly evenly. Mrs. Williams’s approaches were better than her opponent’s, but as in Saturday’s match against Miss O. Kay (St. Clair, Dunedin), Mis Horton's putting was excellent. Miss M. Payton '(Rotorua) enjoyed an advantage over Miss S. Watson (Manawatu) in the long wooden shots. .Miss Watson missed two easy short approaches going out, and coming home her putting let her down. Mrs. Dodgshun (Balmacewan, Dunedin) continued her triumphant career this morning, defeating Airs. D. Stout (Wellington) 9 and 7. Mrs. Stout has also been playing good golf, but this morning she met more than her match in the Dunedin player. Mrs. Dodgshun went out in the excellent tally of 37. two under bogey. Standing 7up at the turn, she took the first two holes on the way homo in bogey, Mrs. Stout finishing in neither, and won the match at the conclusion of the 11th hole. Mrs. Dodgshun’s game was well nigh perfect. In only one hole did she take more than bogey, and that was at the 6th, where she wasted a putt. Miss V. Upham (Miramar), fresh from her victory over Miss S. Watson in the ladies’ final at Napier last week, had to submit to Miss M. Stevens, a South Island lady who has shown very consistent form throughout the tournament. Miss Upham played with grim deterInination to-day, and it was only after n close struggle that she was defeated S and 1. Mrs. Sclanders (Wellington) did a good round against Miss G. Siefert (Manawatu) this morning. Going out in 38, one under bogey, she stood 4 up at the turn and after Miss Siefert had taken two holes in bogey to reduce Mrs. Sclander’s lead to two, Airs. Sclanders placed the issue beyond all doubt by tak»ng the 13th. 14th. and 15th, each in one under bogey. Miss M. Guy (Manawatu) took Miss E. Culling (Auckland) to the 19th hole before she duffed her drive and took sto hole out. Miss Culling got on to the green in two, and holed out with her second putt. The report of the New Zealand Ladies’ Golf Union, presented at the annual general meeting of the union at Palmerston this evening, views with pleasure the continued increase in the number of clubs affiliated to the union. During the year nine new clubs, namely, Carterton, Gore, Hamner. Marlborough, Opunake, Parkvale, Rangitikoi, Keefton, and To Puke, were affiliated; bringing the total number of affiliated clubs to ninety-nine. Applications already in hand for affiliation for next season, states the report, will bring the total to well over 100. This shows an increase of 40 in the past six years. The union places on record its deep regret at the death of Miss K. Rett ray and Mr. R. C. Kirk. Miss Rattray was one of the union’s earliest enthusiasts and original president of the union, an office which she held ’’or many years. At the time of her death she was one of the vice-presidents of tho union. She was the donor of the Rattray Cup for competition at the New Zealand championship meetings. Mr. R. C. Kirk, remarks the report, though not officially connected with the Ladies’ Golf Union, was for many years head of all the golf in this country, and his mindly interest and keen enthusiasm will be very much missed. The statement of accounts shows that the union is in a sound financial position.

To-night’s annual aieeting of the union was held in committee, but a statement will shortly bo issued to the Press.
