MANY NEARING COMPLETION A PROGRESS REPORT The latest report, of the city engineer on works in hand or proposed is an informative one, giving, as it does in •Mail, the location of the works, description, date of authority, total estimated cost, date of commencement, and in some cases the date of completion or probable date, anfl occasional observations on the works. The list comprises 74 works exclusive of workshops or similar works.

The construction of the bear-pit. at Newtown Park Zoo, which is to cost £997, was commenced on June 15, and is still proceeding. Happy Valley Road widening and improvement is to be completed this month at an estimated cost of £B5O from the Mayor’s relief fund. The Hutt Road slip is now clear of the road The wall in Abel Smith Street which has been the subject of a good deal of agitation in the past, has just been completed at a cost of £670. The widening of Grafton Road is expected to be finished this month, and this vast improvement to a dangerous thoroughfare will cost the city in the vicinity of £B5OO, the money coming out of the unemployment loan. Fencing work, etc., in Hornsey Road, which was commenced-in March, is another unemployment loan work which is almost finished, and the total cost will be £4500. Front the Mayor’s relief fund £2OOO lias been allocated to the new road at Wadestown, which was commenced a month ago, and will take to the end of the year to finish, while from the same fund £lOOO to each was allocated to Palliser Road and Ngaio Gorge Road for widening work, which will take two months to see through yet. The custodian’s residence at Wilton’s Bush, authorised last December at a cost of £1250, is in hand, and also' quarters for the custodian at Newtown Library at a cost of £445. Alterations are in progress at the electricity department building in. Harris Street (£1158), while the tramway workshops at Kilbirnie, authorised in December, 1925, at a cost of £63,995, are still in progress, though nearing completion. Sand levelling at Rongotai, «nd the construction of the road across to Lvall Bav, for which £6490 was allocated (£4490 unemployment loan and £2OOO Mayor’s relief fund),, are still in progress, but the £6OO additional for the employment of returned soldiers on these works has been expended. Other unemployed works are proceeding at Point Halswell (£15,600), Glenmore. Road (£17j524), formation Western Park, Karori (£5000), and Kaiwarra Park (£3000). Sixteen small jobs in connection with the water and drainage department are under way, onlv three of which exceed £5OO. ’ ■ , - , , The reserves department lias in hand the formation of Nairnville Park '£12,300), Island Bav q lay area (£1300), Ririe Street croquet lawn (£450), treeplanting on Town Belt (£1000) , and the formation of tennis courts at Vogeltown (£800).
