On Saturday evening the Waireka, one of the smaller vessels of Messrs. A. Hatriek and Co.’s river fleet, sank at her moorings at the company’s mam. wharf at the Junction of Taupo Quay and Somme Parade. During Saturday a cargo of timber and kerosene was taken in, and the steamer was to sail up-river that night. Shortly after 7 p.m. the crew temporarily left the Waireka and on their return at 10.39 p.m. were surprised to find her swamped alongside the wharf. It is surmised that the vessel became caught at tho wharf and did not get free with the rising tide, thus becoming filled with, water. Fortunately (he cargo was not perishable and no damage resulted from its contact with the water. The vessel was successfully refloated this morning without being damaged..

Mr. L. Pleasants severed his connection with the City Council as cirt valuer at the end of last month, and on Saturday morning he was met by the office staff and presented with a clock and an inscribed gold pencil. The Waitotarfi County Council has always endeavoured to prevent its side roads from going back, but 'the time has arrived when more surface sealing work can be done on the main road. The Main Highway- Board has approved of the council’s specifications, and' tenders will shortly tie called for 6J miles of main road work. Several stretches of tar will be put down, the longest being from the top of the Waitotara Hill to a jwint near Maxwell. Empire Trade Week commenced in Wanganui to-day. City shops are to the fore with effective displays ol British goods. The window-dressir ~ competition has created a lot of interest among retailers, and the attractive windows are a credit to ths city.
