THE RACING WORLD

NOMINATIONS FOR WELLINGTON SPRING MEETING

NOTES AND COMMENTS

By “The Watcher.”)

"Mulga,” Paraparumu.— Your inquiry is receiving attention. The information does not happen to be at hand at tho moment. Entries for the principal handicaps at the Canterbury Jockey Club's New Zealand Cup meeting, also for the Canterbury Cup and Stead Cup will close on Friday at 8 p.m." Nominations for all events at the spring meeting of the Masterton Pacing Club will close on Monday, at 9' p.m. An interesting entry for the. Carterton meeting is that good horse Suggestion, Suggestion has not ran since he won tho Wairarapa Cup on New Year’s Day, 1926, and he entered the list of aged horses this season. Provided he stands up to his work, there should bo more races for him. Ilynanna and Royal Ceres are amongst the nominations for the Carterton meeting. Star Stranger pleased the track critics at Auckland on Saturday by his gallop over a mile. Star God, who went with him over the last six furlongs, also shaped well. Joy King, who was oft colour last month, is reported now to bo doing well. Southern writers express the opinion that Aberfeldy is not a boy’s horse, and that he needs a much stronger horseman than was possible to procure lor him at tho weights allotted him at Geraldine. Tho Geraldine course is considered not to havo been suited to Hoylake’s longstriding action, and it may bo at the Wingatui or Riccarto.i metings before he shows his best form again. Civility and Kiosk, who havo been showing good form in track work at Wanganui, have gone north to race at Ellerslie on Saturday. Agrion pulled up quite sound after working at Kiccarton on Saturday morning. There will bo plenty of racing to engage attention this week. To-morrow the Manawatu Hunt Cl’ub will hold its annual steeplechase meeting at Awapuni, on Thursday tho Kurow meeting will take place, on Friday and Saturday, therfi will bo racing at .Otaki, on Saturday at Oamaru, and the Auckland spring meeting days are Saturday and Monday. Grand Knight, Shot Silk, and Wild Pigeon left Trentham for Auckland yes terday. They havo all worked well lately, Grand Knight in particular doing really well, and with luck, they should get into the money at Ellerslie. Grand Knight will probably start in the sprint event. Murillo, the winner of the A.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap at Randwick yesterday, is an English four-year-old gelding by Gainsborough, and comprises one of several English horses brought out by Mr. Connolly on the occasion of his last visit. They havo been gradually improving, and on Saturday Mote won the concluding event, while now Murillo has taken the big prize. Mr. Connolly was at one time one of the biggest speculators on tho Australian turf, and there is not much doubt that lio has in the present instance had a fine win. Vaals would also be solidly supported by his connections in the Epsom Handicap on Saturday, but the money won in both instances would not go to many people. The failures of Gothic and Limerick would put thousands of pounds into the bags of the bookmakers. Limerick, although beaten in the Metropolitan, rose to great height even in defeat, and his position of runner-up reflects tho greatest credit upon him. He has now experienced tho bad luck to run second in the Sydney Cup and Metropolitan Handicap at Randwick in two successive visits, and each time ho has been unfortunate enough to strike bad weather. Although the weights allotted him may prevent him winning big prizes of this-. description, there does not appear much chance of his defeat in weight-for-age , events, provided yesterday's effort does not adversely affect him. Starflight and Footfall were associated in a useful spin over a mile at Riccarton on Saturday. They registered good time (1.43 2-5), without being hurried at the finish, and both horses giving the impression that they could have done better over the last furlong. Footfall is going on well in his Cup preparation. Starflight shapes like being a useful three-year-old, but he is a trifle backward at present. Martarma was responsible for a smart spin over six furlongs, when he finished in front of Sol'ferite. Tho time (1.15 3-5) was as good as was registered during the morning, and it was quite a useful effort, as Solferite is a free galloper, who can usually be relied on for a good effort on the track. Tarleton will not fulfil his hurdle engagements at the Kurow and Oamaru meetings this week. He will have a quiet, time for a few days, following on two sterling performances at Geraldine, and probably he will go south for the Dunedin meeting, where ho is engaged in flat races as well as in hurdle events. Martian Spear, who was a winner on the second dav of tho Geraldine meeting, will not fulfil his engagements at Kurow and Oamaru. H. Nurse intends to give him a short rest before setting him any more severe tasks. He is a useful galloper, likely to be better later in the season. H. Nurse will take several horses south for the Kurow and Oamaru meetings. Ho has Rapier, Chickwheat and Cornstalk in the Kurow Cup, and they are all booked to - start. Projector will make the trip for the hurdle races.

The Auckland Racing Club, owing to the number of starters in the Gordon Handicap, have had,to divide that race. The stake money lias been increased by 250 sovs., making 650 sovs. The winner of eacli division will receive 250 sovs., tho second 50 sovs., .and third 25 sovs. As this only makes eight races on the programme, the totalisator will be open on each division. Royal Mint has probaldy never looked better than he does at the present time, and is one of the fittest horses at El-

lerslie (says the “Star”). The Catmint gelding is evidently one of the hardy kind, for he started on twenty-eight occasions during the last season, winning stake money amounting to .£I2BO. In his fourth start in *ho new season he won the Marton Handicap at the beginning of the present month and, judging by his latest success in the Plumpton ' Handicap at Ellerslie, he should win good money as a five-year-old this season. Hipo and Nasstori arrived at Auckland on Saturday from New Plymouth to compete at the Auckland Pacing Club’s spring meeting. Thaw pleased by the way he galloped with Covent Garden on Saturday morning at Ellerslie over half a mile. lie finished slightly in front, and it should not be long before he is seen to advantage. Ruanui, a member of F. Tilley’s team, has not had a race since being taken to Ellerslie, owing to the heavy state of the ground. He is engaged in the Flying Handicap of seven furlongs at the Auckland spring meeting, and will be started in that event if the going is favourable. Ruanui won the Musket Stakes at the Auckland spring meeting in November last, which marked his first appearance as a two-year-old. Since then ho has contested five races and finished second on two occasions. During the progress of the Geraldine meeting Credit was sold by Mr. J. M. Samson to the Wingatui owner-trainer, F. Shaw, and ran in the latter’s interest in the Wainui Hack Handicap on the second day. At the same time Shaw sold Fabriano who recently won two races at the Otago Hunt meeting, and tho Songbird gelding Singer to Mr. Samson. Martian Spear, tho winner of the Wainui Hack Handicap at Geraldine, is a four-year-old gelding by Greyspear from Ada Marling, so that ho is a halfbrother to Red Wink, a high-class handicap performer over all distances. Martian Spear won his race in meritorious style, and his solid finishing run gave promise of further successes over longer journeys. He has not done much racing, and ho should be worth keeping in mind during the next few weeks. Tho nominations received last night by the Wellington Racing Club for its spring meeting are the best for many years past, and some of the events, >uniess acceptance day sees a big weeding out, will require to be run in divisions. Limerick has not been seen racing in New Zealand for over a year, and should he go to the post in the Champion Plate, for which he has been accorded an entry, the day’s racing will bo invested with added interest. The Wellesley Stakes promises to have a larger field than usual, for 25 juveniles have survived the final payment, and there is every prospect of tho majority being saddled up for the race. The following table shows the entries for the handicap events as
