So far this season a North Taranaki company has killed in the vicinity of 20,000 bobby calves, and possibly 5000 to 10,000 have been dealt with by a South Taranaki company (states the Stratford “Post”). A noticeable feature is the absence of heifer calves. No doubt farmers are rearing the heifers to meet the heavy demand for grade Jersey heifers which is coming from outside fhe district. It is hoped that the industry will bo allowed to continue by tho Homa authorities. It has brought a considerable amount of money into the district during a period when the milk cheques were practically nil and in addition has created extra work for the freezing works when, in normal times, they would be having a slack season.
