HOMECOMING OF THE PRINCE OF WALES

LITTLE USE FOR SET SPEECHES

Dominion Special Service. London, August 18. Preparations are being made for th' homecoming of the Prince ut Waits from Canada, and in addition to the renovations at Marlborough House, his quarters at the Craven Lodge 'Club at Melton Mowbray are being made ready for him. The Prince w.ill entertain his brothers and his hunting friends at Mowbray,' as he has done for the last three seasons. His headquarters are splendidly situated, and are conveniently near the Royal stables. Prince George’s comment on his brother’s speeches has caused some amusement

to those who know something of' the Heir Apparent’s method of speech preparation. Some years ago when he began public speaking he adhered somewhat rigidly to his manuscript. Since then he has deviated from many a set speech. On one occasion when he returned rather ■ hurriedly from Melton Mowbray to speak at a Welsh gathering in London he unceremoniously bluepencilled portions of the prepared speech, but, none the less, delivered a fine speech on Wales and its ideals. He had deleted what he termed the “drv stuff,” and proceeded to jot down a number of points upon which he later dilated with considerable success. The Prince keeps a diary of all his public work. He has written a complete record of his present visit to Canada, and has kept a similar account of all his tours. The Duke of York also believes in a diary, and on the occasion of his visit to Australia and New Zealand made it a rule to write a full account of the day’s doings before’ retiring to rest.
