Tho American single championship tournament has commenced at Forest Hills, the surprise of tho first day being the defeat of. Lacoste, Hie defending title-holder. Results are as follow: Frank Owens (Atlanta) beat Rene Lacosfo (France), 6—l, 6—l, 6—2. ,W .F. Johnson (Philadelphia) beat Dr. George King (New York), 7—5, 6—3, i—s. The latter is tenth ranking American player. Ycshira Ohla (Japan) beat Clarence Griffin (California), 2—6, 7—5, 6—2, 3—6, 6-3. Jacques Brugnon (Trance) beat Gregory ikigniu (Newark), 6—4, 7—5, 6—3. WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETING. Tho Management Committee of tho Wellington Provincial Lawn Tennis Association met on Monday. Tho chairman, Mr. M. E. F. Airey, ■■ reported continued good progress in the work on the Miramar grounds. It is proposed io commence the initial foundations in preparation for another 16 bard courts, and in order to push on witii tho work generally more labour is to bo engaged. I* was decided to run an American tournament at Christmas commencing on Monday December 26. The events will be men’s and ladies’ doubles with a post entry mixed event if circumstances' permit. Entry forms will be available shortly. . The finalising of the organisation ot the inter-club competition was arranged for. It was proposed to place ten courts on one side for this purpose cverv Saturday during the season, witn a possible increase un to when the grass courts become available. It was hoped that lull details of the grades to l-o played would be available before long.
