SCOW FOUNDERS AT WHARF
Dominion Special Service. Auckland, September 13. The scow Alwin G. foundered last night at Nelson Street Wharf, where she was waiting to discharge, a cargo of sand from Waipu. There was no one aboard at the time, and when the owners came down to their vessel this morning only the masts were showing above the water. Fortunately the water was too shallow to allow the vessel to capsize, .and when the tide had fallen enough for the deck to be seen, the cargo was still there. The work of discharging it was commenced immedi atelv, as it was hoped to transfer it all to a? barge before it was again covered by the tide
It is believed that the weight of sand proved too great for the vessel when she was resting on the mud at low tide, and that this has strained the hull.
The Alwiq G. is an Auckland-built vessel, and is owned by Messrs. A. Glass and W Alcock
