TO MERGE

EDUCATIONAL BODIES Two delegates from the Parents’ and Teachers’ Association, of the Kelburn Normal school,.Messrs! J. Priestlev and F: H. Harland waited upon the School Committees’ Association . last night to ask that the body which they represented' should' be admitted to' affiliation. Mr. 'Priestley explained that their organisation was interested in the furthering of. the interests of education amongst children. They were not elected at an ordinary meeting of householders, and were' not recognised as a committee by the Education Board. The normal school Was different from an ordinary school. The teachers were there to train the children, but also to receive instruction themselves. Their' desire to become affiliated, with the association sprang from their belief that this affiliation would be of mutual benefit. They felt at present that they were not within the circle of education and wished, to become known and felt. The constitution provided that all school committees in the Wellington district should be eligible for affiliation said the chairman (Mr. A. Parlane). The question was whether the organisation was a school committee within the meaning of the rules. Mr. T. Grimshaw considered that the association was a school committee and moved that their affiliation- should be approved. This was seconded bv Mr. C .H. Nicholls. . . ’ .

Other members expressed doubts and suggested that. the association should be recognised as an auxiliary.

There were quite a number of parents’ associations said Mr, L. Hennessy and while he thought that th* association should be welcomed he would no* like to see their own body weakened bv becoming other than a school committees’ association. It was decided to admit the Parents’ and Teachers’ Association to affiliation when formal application was made.
