EMPIRE BROADCAST

MR. MARCUSE’S TEST

INTERRUPTED BY BREAKDOWN BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION. Copyright. London, September 11. Fifty Australians, making a breakfastless event, sat in the studio used by Mr. Gerald Marcuse, wondering as they watched the microphone, whether the first Empire broadcast was reaching Australia. Then came a tragic breakdown. A condenser suddenly failed, causing the generator to blow out, and the plant, which had hitherto stood the severest tests, was mute for fifty minutes. It was something of an achievement tor Mr. Marcuse and his two assistants to rig an emergency supply from the public mains, but the breakdown necessitated cutting down the programme by half. As all the items were picked up by valve sets in the south of England, strong hopes were held that most got through. Mr. Marcuse is undismayed, and says he will continue his pioneering, and is sanguine of ultimate success. DUCHESS OF YORK'S FIRST BROADCAST London, September 11. The Duchess of York’s first broadcast from Glasgow will be at 11.30 o’clock on the morning of September 21, when she will receive the Freedom of the City.
