A DANGEROUS SPOT

BITUMINISBD ROAD AND HORSE TRAFFIC.

At last night’s meeting of the Petono Borough Council mention was made of the dangerous bituminised road and bridge approach to Jackson Street.. Mr. W. B. Gough, the borough inspector, said that the bitumen was so smooth that drivers of horses were compelled to uso the footpath. As a result of this two men had been prosecuted only that morning. At the same time one could not blame drivers for using the footpath because the road was so bad that horses were liable to slip, and serious accidents might occur. “If the road is left in its present condition,’ added the inspector, “it is highly dangerous to horse traffic; and if the horse traffic is allowed to uso the footpath, then pedestrians must use the road. This is very dangerous, especially to women and children.” The Mayor (Mr. D. McKenzie) said he thought the spot in question, which had previously belonged to the Hutt Council, was under the control of the Highways Board. That being so, the matter would be referred to that body.
