WELLINGTON BUILDINGS
SOME INTERESTING FIGURES. It is said that if one allows five persons- to every private dwelling in Wellington. n rough estimate of the population would result, but as few people know the number of dwellings in Greater Wellington—that is, from Klinndtilinli to the north to Cook Strait to the south—they are not able to make the calculation. The latest year-book of the City Council, bused on 1926 figures, gives the number of private dwellings as . 20,299. By the rough method of calculation the population of greater Wellington should be 101,195. which is not. very fur out, as the population on April 1. 1925 (vide Local Authorities Hand-book) was 9<,3<0, whilst that of the metropolitan area (which takes in the Hutt \ all ey and near-by bays) is given ns 118.490, on April 'l, 1925. The City of Wellington Year-book gives’ the number of hotels (nublic and private), boarding-houses, residential clubs, etc., at 80; institutions, 53; business premises (which includes banks, shops, offices, factories, warehouses, etc.), 1870; public buildings. 126; and othCr buildings, 2624—a total of 24.982 buildings. . . Wellington, however, is growing probably faster than any other metropolitan area in New Zealand. The recent establishment. of such large and important works as the General Motors, Metiers, Ltd. and Macßobertson’s at. Petone. and tlic. great oil works at Miramar, indicates elearlv that this area must become the industrial centre of New Zealand, so that the growth of the place is likely to be accelerated in the near future. Buildings to the value of £1, 926,832 were erected in 1925-26.
