SIiLF-iVUMITTED THIEF. Dominion Special. Christchurch, December 30. Although a man who appeared before justices of the peace in the Magistrate’s Court this morning has been declared an habitual criminal, his name was Suppressed from publication. He was charged with the theft at Palmerston North on November 5 of a gramophone, valued at £ll 155., the property of Arthur J. Berryman. Chief Detective Dewis said that accused admitted the theft. He was, however, in the position of having been declared an habitual criminal, and it was not in the power of that Court to deal with him. The chief detective asked for a remand for a week and said that a request had been made to hiin that accused’s name should be suppressed because his mother was ill. Accused was remanded accordingly and the Bench acceded to, the request for suppression of his name.
