FATALLY SHOT

ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE OF RIFLE Dominion Special. Masterton, December 27. On Christmas Day on the property of Mr. R. E. Wall, Haurangi, Martinborough, Kenneth Port, of Feilding (19 years of age) was accidentally shot and subsequently died in the Greytown Hospital. It appears that, together with three other lads, Port was proceeding through the bush in single file, the one in the rear carrying a .403 rifle. Just before the accident, Port turned round to the lad behind him and asked how the rifle was and whether it was “half cocked.” Almost immediately afterwards the trigger caught in a twig and the rifle discharged, the bullet hitting Port in the left leg below the knee. Dr. Webb, of Martinborough, was immediately summoned and Forth was admitted to the Greytown Hospital, where it was found necessary to amputate the leg as the bone was completely shattered. He did not rally and hedied late this afternoon. Deceased was the second son of Mr. W. D. Port, of Feilding.
