DOGS FOR CRIMINALS

Detectives tof the dog world have been busily engaged in tracking down “criminals” at the Crystal Palace in the open, trials of the Alsatian League of Great Britain (says the “Statesman”). Conditions provided that, having discovered the hiding-place of the “criminal,” the dog must not attack, but must merely give tongue and crouch and await the directions of his handler. To avoid the unpleasant results of any mistake on the dog’s part, the “criminal” wore a stout suit of. padding. Some of the dogs, having unearthed their “criminal,” • seemed reluctant to let him go, even at the command of their masters and in spite of the gunfire directed at them. One animal, in addition to causing the “criminal” to fall to the ground, succeeded in wresting the stick with which he was being attacked from the man, carrying it off in triumph to his master.

The test of refusing food was too much for some dogs. Although they prevented the article which they were guarding from being stolen not a few had at the same time a light, meal from the hands of the would-be thieves.
