ECONOMIC CONFERENCE

UNITED STATES INVITED TO SEND DELEGATES

DIFFERENCE OF OPINION IN WASHINGTON

REGARDING WISDOM OF ACCEPTANCE

(Rec. December 26, 5.5 p.m.) Washington, . December 24

Official notification has been received that the United States has been invited to send delegates to the International Economic Conference, to be held under the auspices of the League of Nations in Europe next May. The State Department declines to say whether it will accept, until the text of the invitation becomes known. However, it is felt that it would be unwise for the United States to enter, even through , spokesmen, a conference in Europe that might throw open for discussion such questions as the American tariff, immigration restriction, and a possible ' modification, or even cancellation of, the war debts. Yet there is some feeling in official circles that the United States might well attend, in order that its position regarding important questions might be set forth by its own citizens, without being subjected to unanswered criticism by others.
