(north stating that flood conditions exist in a number of districts, roads being under water. It is also reported that about one mile of railway line between Kumeu and Waimauku, about twenty-five miles from Auckland, has been washed away. ~ ' The weather conditions at the moment are very threatening. The barometer is half an inch below “Raining” and still falling. Ellerslie Racecourse is tn a very sodden state, and the prospects for the opening of the summer meeting to-morrow are far from encouraging. The rain cleared for about one hour earlv this afternoon, when the Cunard liner Carinthia, with wealthy American tourists on a world excursion,, steamed into Auckland Harbour, and in fitful sunshine the visitors were able to obtain a better impression. The vessel was berthed shortly after 5 p.m.
