TO CONTROL ALIEN IMMIGRATION Dominion Special,. . . . Dunedin, December 21. Replying to the Dunedin Chamber ol Commerce’s protest against the number of Asiatics entering the Dominion, the Hon. W. D. Stewart in a letter stated that in 1920 legislation was passed which gave the Government ample power to impose an effective restriction on the number of aliens or race aliens (including Asiatics) entering New. Zealand for permanent residence. He quoted the registrations and said that so far as he was aware no other country had a more effective, means of controlling such immigration. The following figures showed the numbers of Indians ami Chinese admitted to New Zealand during the last ten years, and showed clearly the effect of the amending legislation, which came into effective operation on April 1, 1821, in restricting the immigration of persons of those nationalities: —Indians: 1915, 13; 1916 92; 1917, 92; 1918, 138; 1.919, 193; 1920, 225; 1921. 137; 1922, 8; 1923, 3-2; 1924, 44; 1925, 149. Chinese: 1915, 265; 1916, 1327; 1917, 272; 1918, 256; 1919, 418; 1920, 1477; 1921. 255; 1922, 162; 1923, 100; 1921, 93; 1925, 58. So far as Chinese were concerned, the Government was not issuing any permits for permanent residence during the present year.
