MEDICAL STUDIES

NEW ZEALAND GRADUATES ABROAD Dominion Special. Auckland, December G. Very keen admiration of American hospitals was expressed to-day by Dr. L. B. Barnett, formerly professor of surgery at the medical' school at Dunedin University, on his return from an extended tour of the Continent, Great Britain and the United States, Dr. Barnett said that most of the great American hospitals had the support of wealthy patrons, whose contributions enabled these institutions to bring their equipment up to date and keep abreast of most modern practice. While in the United States Dr. Barnett spent some time at the famous Mayo clinic at Rochester. He mentioned that lie had made three vsits to' the clinic within the past few years and noted that each time this wonderful institution had made considerable progress in the matter of research worn. One feature that struck him was the number of New Zealand graduates who were visiting the clinic and getting first-hand information about the research work being carried on there. During his visit to Great Britain Dr. Barnett a'so camo across a number of young New Zealand graduates who had gone Horae for post graduate study. He said that ho was extremely pleased to find the high esteem in which these young men were held and this was shown by this appointments many of them had obtained. It was gratifying to find that Now Zealand graduates were so highly thought of.” "I certainly think wo are proceeding on the right lines in New Zealand,” added Dr. Barnett. “There are, no doubt, lots of things to be learned from older countries, hut I don’t think our hospitals, are behind those of towns of similar size abroad. It has always seemed to a mo a very wise thing for our young medical men to go abroad every few years and thus keep New Zealand up to date. They have been doing that and it is this fact that helps to explain why air hospitals are so efficient.*'
