PRIVATE MOTOR-CARS
BLAMED FOR TRAM DEFICIENCY.
Dominion Special. Christchurch. December 6. At the annual meeting of the Christchurch Tramwav Board to-day the chairman (Mr. W. J. Walter), after a survev of the board’s finances, expressed the opinion that, the only way to meet a falling revenue and increased power and wages costs was to impose a propertv rate. During the half-year ended September 19 there was a deficiencv of. £1*2..0(X). But this was the worst period of the year and had always shown a loss. He was hopeful that the financial year ending March 31 would close with a clear sheet. Most of the financial difficulties of the board, he considered, were due to the increase in the use of private motorcars. ’
