“MAN-TRAPS"

(To the Editor.) Sir,—l am not one of those who are fond of rushing into-' print with complaints about all and sundry, but would rather appreciate the efforts of all who attempt to improve things, even though they fail. The Citv Council has been severely criticised of late (and some-, times with justification), but how many praise? Take, for instance, our bitumen roads —the noise that' has been raised about "pot holes” and other faults. All admit that these roads are not perfect (nothing on this earth is). But with all the failures, the bitumen road is a tremendous advance on the old macadam road. Think of the absence of dust as compared with olden days (as demonstrated by the council’s advertising half a dozen watering-carts for sale), and the consequent improved health conditions. But there is one thing, 1 think, which might be brought under the notice of the council’s reading department, which might prevent future criticism, if. acted upon. This is the cutting through of the kerbing and footpath for cart entrances. These “trippers” of the unwary and those with failing sight, are as certainly unnecessary as they are annoying,'and I .have seen some nasty falls and many “jars.” particularly at night-time, with people running for cars. In Luxford Street, Berhampore, there are four of these "traps” in 160 yards, and now it is evident by the bent, kerbing already on the job that another is to be put in in Adelaide Road, between Palm Grove and Luxford Street. These. things would not be endured in the city, so why not install the wheel bridges in residential areas, where cars are lighter?— I am, etc., THOUGHTFUL.
