DRAUGHTS

CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE DOMINION A meeting of persons interested in the game of draughts was held in tho roonw of the Working Men’s Club and Literary Institute on Saturday evening, whan preparations were advanced a further stage for Ute N.Z. draughts championship tourney, that is scheuuled to open in Wellington on April 15 next. Mr. L. Costello, chairman of the local gathering, tivc, presided over a large gathering, which included Mr. A. E. Ballard, tha club’s president. The acting-hon. secretory (Mr. F. K. Kelling) read a number of leters received since the previous meeting was held. Several holders ot subscription lists have not yet sent m the progress reports asked lor, but a seems certain that a useful and very welcome measure of support is likely to be forthcoming from various centres, in aid of New Zealand’s 1927 championship contest. The receipt of a handsom® donation from Mr. H. Tredegar (a former chairman of the club’s chess and draughts section) was acknowledged with thanks. It was decided to ask colleq; tors to return their subscription list* by March 15. A letter was read from Mr J. Bruce, of New Plymouth, with reference to the Wellington executive’s decision that the championship contest be an all-round tourney, each entrant playing two amei with every other competitor. Mr. Bruce urged that each player should me.et every other competitor once if there should not be time for each pair to play two games, either by reason ot their being a record number. <t entries or through the position arising from some of tho competitors not being able to secure as much leave of absence as in former years. After the matter had been discussed from various angles, it was decided that an. all-round tourney held’if the entries number-20 or le‘S If the entries exceed 20 the tournoy’is to be either a one-round contest or a knock-out event, according to tflm decision of a majority of the competitors. When the championship was contested at New Plymouth in ' 19.5 some of the competitors whose holidays were limited had to default m the later stages of an all-round . tourney, and it is desired to avoid having a repetition of that unsatisfactory feature. Mr. A. E. Ballard (president) made some useful suggestions, for tion at the next meeting. He felt confident that his club would assist as whole-heartedly as it tad done cn formor occasions, and that iho 1927 ch tun*’ pionship contest’ would more successful than that of z *921, the last allotted to Wellington. (Applause.)
