WANGANUI v. TARANAKI HAWKE CUP CONTEST Dominion Special. Wanganui, December 3. The first Hawke Cup match of the 1926-27 cricket season was commenced on Cook’s Gardens this afternoon in fine weather. The game had to be postponed this morning on account of the rain overnight. There were two alterations in the Taranaki team, Botterill and Wilson replacing Little and Gibson. There were no replacings in the Wanganui team. The teams took the field as under rTaranaki: Kingston (captain), Clarke, Cheevers, Cole. Lay, Wilson, Crombie, Grayson, Naismith, Botterill and Wileon. Wanganui: Orr (captain), Bernau, Orton, Harris, Williams, Wood, Hutchison, Treadwell, Dempster, Wells and Holland. At the drawing of stumps Taranaki had scored 188 runs and Wanganui had lost two wickets for 17 runs. Taranaki won the toss and went in on a fairly soft wicket. The batting of the visitors was very steady. Kingston, of All Black fame, made top score for Taranaki, compiling 64 runs in solid fashion, and he reigned at the crease for 80 minutes His display was attractive throughout, while hig batting was always crisp. Naismith also batted stylishly. He received an injury in the early part of the game, but came on later. The innings closed, however, before he could get going. Botterill made 24 runs in 75 minutes, his defence being solid. Lav and Cheevers were attractive with the bat. especially the former. The best partnership of the innings wag between Kingston and Botterill. who put on 67 runs for the fourth wicket, which were most needed, as it was at the critical stage of the game. Wanganui opened with Orr and Dempster. but off the sixth ball, off Clarks. Dempster was given out 1.b.w.. when be had scored one run. Orr. Wanganui's skipper, followed shortly after, when he had compiled 13 runs. Plav will be resumed at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
