CAR ATTEMPTS TO PASS

MAN FATALLY INJURED Dominion Special. Christchurch, December 3. In avoiding a collision with another car in Victoria Street on the afternoon of November 21, a car driven by Arthur Howard Mulray, land and estate agent, Christchurch, jumped the footpath and struck Charles Nelson, a labourer, who died the following day in hospital. The inquest was resumed to-day before Mr. H. P. La wry (Coroner). Dr. D. N. Epstein, house surgeon, said that on admission to the hospital Nelson was suffering from severe shock, a fracture of the left thigh, and a fracture of the right leg below the knee. Death was due to shock following these injuries A witness stated that Murray’s car came up behind another car driven by a ladv which was turning to the right. Murray slewed to the right, narrowly missed a collision, jumped the footpath, and struck Nelson, pinning him against a door. The Coroner remarked that it was not so much a question of speed, but one as to whether or not, Murray in the circumstances was justified in attempting to pass the car in front. A formal verdict was returned in accordance with the medical testimony.
