FOOTPATHS IN WELLINGTON

STATE DUE TO LACK OF MONEY CONTRADICTORY OPINIONS Of councillors' < Attention to the state of the footpaths of Wellington; particularly those, in the suburbs, was drawn by Councillor R. A. Wright at a meeting .of the Citv Council last night. Many of them, 'declared the speaker, were in a very bad way, and he hoped to see a stun placed on next year’s estimates for footpath construction. Councillor J. Burns thought it should be the polity of the concil to raise a loan and earmark it for footpaths. In fact, the only way to face the position was by way of a special loan ~ , , Councillor G. A- Troup said that Wellington footpaths were probably the worst of auv in the larjre < ities in New Zealand, arid whetlier it was done by loan or any other way, he hoped something would be done to put the footpaths in order. ' Councillor F. W. Manton took exception to what Councillor Troup had said—that Wellington’s fobtpaths were the worst in New Zealand. Knowing New Zealand as lie did, be said tlfat our roads and footpaths were the best in New Zealand. He knew better paths were needed in many of the suburbs, but Councillor Troup_ knew that it was only due to lack of finance. The Mayor 'said be would like to see footpath work done out of revenue. It might be that at the end of the year the Works Committee wotild have a surplus, and that that would be devoted to footpaths. It was clearly a matter for next year. Councillor 11. D. Bennett stated that the money required to put the foot; paths of the city in order was, he thought, about £14,000. The Works Committee intended to ask the council to increase its grant by £lO,OOO to ,£20,000, and if this were done it would be safe to say that a certain amount would be 1 spent on footpaths. ‘ The crux of the position, however, was that the committee was chort of funds.
