THE RACING WORLD

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By

“The Watcher.”)

Nominations for the summer meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club, also forfeit for the Palmerston North Stakes, are due to-night at 'J o’clock. Acceptances for the first day of the Wooijrilie summer meeting will close tQrfl’ght at 9 o’clock. The telegraph , Cilice at Woodville closes at 8 p.m. Acceptances for the first day of the Wellington Trotting Club’s summer meeting will close to-night at 8 o’clock A fruitful source of discussion in racing circles at present will be the weights for the Auckland Cup and Railway Handicaps. It is perhaps hardly a fair comparison to bring in New Zealand Cup handicaps, as in the latter rae’e the maximum weight for the topweight was 9.6, but as Mr Macmenamin with a free hand has only started Rapine with 31b more and only lib. above what he won the race with last year, one- must regard Rapine as exceptionally well treated, especially as his form at Riccarton warranted the conclusion that he is just as good as he was twelve months ago. His victories in the Canterbury Cup and Stead Cup proved that quite apart from the fact that he would have won the New Zealand Cup with a bit of luck. Equally as well treated, if not better, is his stable companion Star Stranger. He won the Metropolitan Handicap, at Randwick with 8.9, and ran within half a second of the Australasian record. The A.J.C. handicapper rated him a better horse after that performance than Rapine, while Mr. Henrys assessed him as Rapine’s equal in framing the handicaps for the Metropolitan at Riccarton. Star Stranger’s Riccarton form can be disregarded, as he had done little work of any consequence as the result of a cold. With either of these two rattling good stayers Mr. A. B Williams will have a first-class opportunity of repeating his victory of last year. Outside of this pair must come Piuthair and Clarinda, also, curiously enough, in the one stable. Piuthair has made a rapid rise from the ranks of the hacks, but as a winner of the C.J.C Metropolitan Handicap she cannot complain of 7.1. Clarinda certainly appeared entitled to receive more than the minimum. She is rated amongst some who have n<?t even got out of hack class, yet she won the last Manawatu Cup under 7.12, the Park Stakes at Napier under 8.8 in 2tnin. 6 4-ssec., and after being extremely unlucky in the New Zealand Cup under 7.2, won the Fendalton Handicap under 8.6. Limerick has received 21b. less than his weight-for-age, but he will not be a starter. Battlement will have to be taken into account with 7.2, which is 71b. above his weight-for-age. The company he beat at Randwick was not the best, but he ran a record for the mile and three-quarters, and good judges in Australia picked him to win the New Zealand Derby, in which he was unable to start. None of these horses, of course, may prove the eventual winner, racing being the uncertain game that it is, and figures are sometimes liable to lead one astray, but they have certainly been given the opportunity. Racegoers need have no worry over the prospects of Reremoana ard Ladv Cavendish in the Railway Handicap, as unless a radical alteration in plan takes place they will not be on the scene. O. Cox stated at Feilding that he would be at Awapuni for the Christmas racing* Two horses who appear well treated are Shirley 8.0 and Deluge 712. Deluge showed no form to speak of last season, but the previous year he was brilliant, as he always is when right. Amongst his successes of that period was the Manawatu .Stakes, carrying 9.7, in which he beat Motley and Tamatete, the “also starteds” being Runnymede, Mimetic, and Black Cat At Feilding on Tuesday Orchid was made by Mr. Henrys to give Deluge Jib. He did it successfully, £>ut Deluge is nothing like what he will be at Christmas if all goes well with him, and Orchid’s chance of then giving him 91b. is so remote that he will hardly be asked to attempt it. Limited 7.11 is another who reads well. F. Tillev will take Mandane, Limited, and Ruanui to Auckland for the Cun meeting It has not yet been decided to start Mandane in the Cup, and the chances are that she will be reserved for a less severe test. Sunart has broken down again, this time in the good leg, as the result of favouring his unsound one, and it is unlikelv that any further attempt wil’ be made to train him. The two-year-old Arrow Lad has been suffering from a cold since the Wellington meeting, and can be regarded as a non-starter at Woodville next week. J. M Cameron brought The Hawk over to Feilding for the Stakes, but the state of the track prevented a start. The Hawk is engaged at Auckland, but he will also probablv be given some engagements at Awapuni, and a decision as to which meeting he will attend will be reached later. Tempean has been sold, and it is understood that bis destination is Western Australia Alaric was sold prior to the last race at F'eilding on Wednesdav, and delivery taken after the race His new owner is the Bulls trainer C. McKay, who has been successful with Santiago. The price was something like 100 sovs. Kalos, the three-year-old maiden, raced at Feilding by Mr. C. F. Vai-

lance, is closely related to Peneus and Little River. His dam, Black Lake, is a half-sister by All Black to the dam of Peneus tnd Little River, while Boniform, the sire of Kalos, is also the sire of Peneus, and Martian, the sire of Little River, is Boniform’s half-bro-ther. Kalos was a sufferer by the trouble that occurred in his race, and it does not look as if it will be long before he is out of the maiden class.

Another maiden runner at Feilding, Lady Cynthia, is a promising hack. She is a half-sister to Hallowroz by Cyntoi, a horse bred in England in 1915, and imported to New Zealand in 1920 by Mr. H. Tamumu. There are not many Cintois racing, but Lady Cynthia is a very nice looking mare. Cyntoi is notable from the fact that his pedigree is free of Galopin or St. Simon blood.

Neither Lady Cavendish nor Lady Bentinck has done a great deal of work this season, and they are likely to shew improved form during the holidays. Ladv Cavendish began very brilliantly in the Feilding Stakes. The Thorn ran a remarkably good race in the Feilding Stakes. Mr. Currie has a very strong team at the present time, and The Thorn will be a good stake earner shortly. Seven from the stable are entered at Auckland, but it is posible one will be left at home. Lysander will make the Derby payment but it is undecided about him being a starter. Plain Sailing has not done a great deal of work, but favoured by her light weight she made no race of the hack sprint at Feilding the first day. She has in first placings won over the hack allowance, and will in future have to race in open company. Silvermine’s win at Feilding w*as not freely anticipated even by Hawera track watchers. He bad not galloped further than three furlongs prior to winning, although what he had done showed that he might be speedy, like his dam. However, there is no reason.yet to herald him as her sucessor, although he gives a lot of promise. Jockey A. McCormac was in good form on the second day of the Feilding meeting, riding three winners. Royal Damon appears to run his best races from behind. At any rate he usually fails when he begins with the leaders, and all his sucesses have been gained when he did not occupy a prominent early position.

Resinous was tried over a distance on Wednesday, and from the way he shaped he will be better suited than trying to win sprint events. Peneus, despite his steadier of 9.13, in the heavy ground on Wednesday, was the first to begin, and he made practically all the running until Monaghan came along. No doubt his superior class was responsible for the effort to some extent, but Monaghan won so easily that it looks as if the latter is also something above the ordinary.

The secretary of the Woodvile District Jockey Club states that in the Flying Hack Handicap, as Decoy Bird was not eligible for this event, the weights of all the other horses have been raised 51b. to bring the top weight to 9.0. In the Borough Handicap, Aston was weighted at 7.13 in mistake for Esthonia. The latter’s weight is now assessed at 7.11.

AUCKLAND NOTES TAKAPUNA PERFORM. ANGES REVIEWED Dominion Special. Auckland, December 2. Arihana ran another good race at Takapuna yesterday, finishing third. When a little more seasoned and settled down the "son of Sir Dighton should make hig presence felt in Juvenile events. Delightinent has come very solid this season, for in his last six starts the son of Catmint has won five races, and finished third on another occasiou. Yesterday, in a mile and a furlong race at Takapuna, he came through at the top of the straight, and won with ease. Lorna Doon again showed what a good one she is when she accounted for the Rakino Handicap at the Takapuna meeting yesterday. She led all the way, and won with ease bv two lengths. Nothing had a chance with her at any stage. Ruapapa was a good wav back when entering the straight in the St. Andrew’s Handicap at Takapuna yesterday, and ho nut in a gieat run, but was just too late to catch Princess Ronnie, The son of Polydamou is in great heart at present. Nippy and Mosaic had bad luck nt the start of the St, Andrew’s Handicap yesterday at Takapuna. The former was side on to the barrier yhen it went up, and he lost several lengths. Mosaic was also left, and during the running, it is stated ho struck one of the stakes carrying the flags put up at the bend into the straight, and was thrown out of his stride. Despite all this ho finished fifth, which was good performance. There is no doubt that the flagging of a course as was done yesterday is unsuitable. The boys coming round a bend are liable in the stress of a race to forget about the flags if they are not actually running alongside them and try for an opening, only to discover that they are on a flag. If a portion of the course has to be cut off there should be a temporary railing run out. If this had been done yesterday it would have been .better. High Finance ran very disappointingly at Takapuna yesterday. The start was a good one, and she was with Lorna Doon for a while, and then fell back

into third position. She made an effort in the straight, bnt failed to run on, and finished fourth. In tho concluding stages she ran about a good deal when the pressure was applied Aurumavis was among tho consistent performers at Takapuna She was fourth in the Cheltenham Handicap on Saturday, fourth in the St. Andrew's Handicap yesterday, and second in the Ngarann'ga Handicap later in tho day. A win should go her way shortly if she retains her present form. Roval Form won the High-weight Handicap at. Takapuna yesterday, and seeing the bad luck with which he has raced recently his victory was well merited. However, his succe-e put him out of the hack class, whereas if it had been a hurdle race, as it used to be, Royal Form would still have remained in that classPassionate was solidly supported in the Kawau Ilighwcight Handicap at Takapuna yesterday, but never threatened danger, and finished last. Ho had the steadier of 11.7. and the distance was beyond him. Previously his best showing has been up to a mile and a quarter True Blood ran up to recent form yesterday, - when ho won the Ngatariiiga Handicap at Takapuna. He was in third position along the back, and ran to the front before the straight. heating Aurumavis at the finish by five lengths, lie was very solidly supported, but tor a "racecourse certainty, bar accidents, ho returned n very Rood price. Ruffles won the. Takapuna Plate nicely, and it was not surprising that be was made a good favourite for the Cautlev Handicap the chief open -print race of the day at Takapuna yesterday. After getting a handy position crossing the top Ruffles nut in his run In the straight and galloping over everything. won well by two lengths Rnff’eis a good horse, and if he goes on the right wav mnch more important event, should frill to him. . There wns n little lumping at Ellerslie this morning. Stnr Comet went over o couple of ponv hurdles twice, and gave ( a really good display for a beginner ]

Urallu and Queen liuierald went fairly well over a round of the schooling hurdles. Stellatour suaped fairly wei over HlO pony Hurdles, and Larry jumped a couple ol hurdles solely. Peter Amans went a round of the uurdles, uno jumped well. Bahama has been a most consistent horse since lie commenced racing, ana his win did not como out oi its turn Daliama started on three occasions last season for two seconds. This season, in tour races, Uahama_has finished second, fourth, and first. lie was iourth it> the Melrose Malden Stakes at Taliapu.ia on Saturday, ami yesterday scored nicely in the Vauxhall Handicap for his owner-trainer—F. Stenning—who has bestowed a lot of attention on the son oi Nassau. • Archeuo was only produced once at the Takapuna meeting, and that was in the Stanley Handicap yesterday. She was handv when the field started to come across the top. and, taking charge before the straight was reached, won it. easv fashion. Archeno is a useful sort and is very well at present. For some time past she has been trained by het owner Mr. AV. J. Urquhart., who turned lrt>r out in nice condition yesterday. Al Ellerslie recently she was suffering from n, sore back, and that accounted for her failing to run into a place there though she was showing up halfway down the straight. At the January sales at Ellerslie Mr. F. Earl. K.C., purchased on behalf cd Dr Ambrose, of Perth, VTest Australia, a yearling filly bv Tea. Trav from lakahau and subsequently for anothet friend in the same State a filly by Tea Trav from Sanacre. The Takanau filly is called Tea Lady, and she first started in the Initial Stakes, in which she came Second tn a field of 18. Later she won the Nursery Handicap carrying a good weight at one of the West Australian Jockey Club meetings, beating a fair field. Tea Lady is very highly spoken of. Hie Sanacre filly has not developed as well as Tea Lady, but she shapes well on the tracks and has good prospects. The Takahau filly was Mr. Earl’s own selection. ~ Dress Circle is back again on the tracks at Ellerslie. , Maveelish raced well on both days at the Takapuna meeting, and it should not be long before she gets on the winning list , . Newbury likes the going good. He failed at Whangarei in the mud, and yesterday in the holding ground did well to run into a place. Cawnpore, who has been racing in Sydney for some months past, wns brought back to Auckland by the Ulimaroa on Tuesday. R. E. Brown took Abbey Day, Gala Day and Rina Manga this morning to Taiimarunui, where they will fulfil engagements on Saturday. Clarus was started in the Cautley Handicap at Takapuna yesterday, but failed to get into a place. He drew the extreme outside, at the barrier and was well back when the field turned for home. Anriculus was last when the field turned for home in the Rakino Handicap, nnd, finishing strongly, the Luculhis filly beat all but Lorna Doon. Auriculus looks as though ho will -win races this season.

King Merv appears as though he is coming back to form, for he finished third on the first day of the Takapuna meeting, and was second yesterday to Ruffles, to whom he was conceding 161 b. When right. King Merv is hard to beat in sprint events. During the running of the Stanley Handicap yesterday at Takapuna, Judge’s Box fell when the field had gone about a furlong. The filly w-as uninjured, and her rider, H. Dulieu, escaped with a shaking. The stewards held an inquiry, and found that the fall was accidental. At the Apia Turf Club’s meeting on Saturdav, October 30 (says the “Samoan Gazette*'’), the two chief races fell to the Hon. O. F. Nelson’s pair, Loyal Irish and Ruperra. The New Zealand horse, Loyal Irish, conceded from. Ist. to 3st. lib. to the other runners in his race, and he won in a manner which eug-<-esfed that he also could have carried two full sacks of copra and then have finished first.
