CRY FOR HIGHER DUTIES
THE ONLY JUSTIFICATION Dominion Special. Auckland, October 14. “If it can be shown that secondary industries can employ more workers in New Zealand, and not raise prices against the consumer, nobody will be more glad to give protection than I am,” said the Hon. A,. D. McLeod (Minister of Industrie's and Commerce) at Papakura, in explaining his attitude towards secondary industries. The Minister referred to the need of . developing secondary industries if the Dominion was to carry a larger population than two million people. As Minister of Lands, and also in his capacity of Minister of Industries and Commerce, Mr. McLeod said that he was able to view both problems, at once, and see the necessary connection that 'existed between primary and. secondary industries. The cry for higher duties, he said, could only be justified by economical production. If manufacturers attempted to add on the amount of duties to the price of their goods, with a view to increasing profits to the men who put capital into the secondary industries, there was going to be “a devil of a row.” (Applause and laughter.)
