REVENUE HOLDING UP WELL EXPENDITURE EXCEEDS ESTIMATE Dominion Special. Christchurch, October 13. “The revenue is holding very well for the first six months of the year,” said the Hon. W. D. Stewart (Acting-Prime Minister and Minister of Finance) this morning. Mr. Stewart remarked thathe had had some trouble in keeping down expenditure for the first halfyear. “We had anticipated in the Budget an increase in expenditure this year of £BOO,OOO, but the first half-year indicates that this amount will be exceeded unless great care is taken during the next six months,” he said. “The expenditure was higher than I anticipated for the first six months, and I am taking steps to have a close scrutiny made bv the different Departments of the causes of the increased expenditure. Tn this way I hope to see a substantial reduction made in the expenditure during the next six months.” New Zealand’s credit at Home was still high, he continued, but the Government did not want to reduce it He hoped to keep the loan expenditure this year substantially below that of last year.
