AUSTRALIAN BETTING
A N.Z. VISITOR’S IMPRESSIONS Dominion Special. Christchurch, October 13. “We know nothing about betting in this country,” said Air. Steve Barrett, the well known Christchurch sportsman who lias just returned from a visit to Sydney. Mr. Barrett has attended all the recent big race meetings on the “other side,” and is much impressed with the way things are run. But the bookmakers do not find favour in his eyes. “No,” he continued, “the scale on which the betting is conducted. is an eye-opener. We know, nothing about it in this country, and it is a good. thing that we don’t. The bookies are fair and above board, and they ran their businesses in an excellent manner, but I would be sorrv to see them on the courses in New Zealand. “The management of the big race meetings is wonderful, a model of efficiency. They handle a crowd of 83,000 with the esse that we would handle ten. The racing itself was good and interesting. Undoubtedly the. best horse in Australia to-dav is Limerick. Given a clear run he would undoubtedly have won the Craven Plate As it was, the winner, Windbag, only just managed to squeeze home.”
