POLICE AND CIVIL CASES. The monthly sitting of the Upper Hutt , Magistrate’s Court was held yesterday. Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., was cn the bench. William John Paul, for being on licensed premises after hours, was fined £2, and 7s. costs. For failing to observe the statutory half-holiday, two shopkeepers, C. T. Elba and M. Williamson, were each fined £l. with 10s. costs. . For riding bicycles without lights, Hugh Watson, J. Sygrove, and Wilfred Munn, were each fined 10s., with 7s. costs. For possessing firearms without registration, F. J. Munn was fined 10s., with Ils. costs, and H. F. Whiteman, 10s., with 7s. costs, and J. Wyett 205., with 7s. costs. „ , , . Leo Kelly and J. Garker, for fighting In a public place, were each fined 205., with 4s. Gd. costs. Carl F._ Lutz, a dairy farmer, who was represented by Mr. A. J. Mazengarb, was charged with failing ttf keep a stockyard clean. Tho inspector, in evidence, stated that Lutz had cleaned his bails satisfac> torily, but had allowed a feeding shed to become insanitary. . Lutz stated that the shed was cleaned two days previously. Weather conditions arid floods, however, had interfered with his water supply, arid he had been unable to clean, his feeding shed,- owing to_ his ram being out of order. Lutz was fined £l. with Ils. costs. Hugh McDowell was convicted and fined £2. with £1 15s. costs, for negligently driving a motor-car. McDowell, it was explained, had collided with a stationary car owned bv ,G. Philips, while returning from a football match at Taita. McDowell and two passengers had, they stated, had two 'shandies" each at the Taita Hotel after the niatcli. Proceeding towards Upper Hutt after dark, in the rain, they observed ahead a car apparently in the act of turning. McDowell crossed to tho wrong side m order to pass behind the other car. Ho realised too late ..that the other' car was stationary, and, in endeavouring to. recover, struck the mudguard of the ether car.

CIVIL BUSINESS. . Judgment by default was given in the following undefended civil cases:—J. A. Forrest v. W. Clark. 17s. Gd.; R. Benge v. H. McNelly, £5 17s. Gd. •F. Taylor, on a judgment summons, was ordered to pay J. H. Clark £ll 4s. forthwith, in default 11 .days’ improvement, H. McNelly to pay' Ford Sales and Service. Ltd.. £22 11s. Id. forthwith, in default 22 days’ imprisonment.

TARANAKI OIL FIELDS The report of the Taranaki Oil Fields Ltd., for the week ended October 9 reads:—Waiapu No. 1 well: Si meh diameter casing recovered. Waiapu No. 2 well: Road construction proceeding satisfactorily.

The Customs revenue collected at the novt of Wellington yesterday totalled £9846. .
