FIERCE FIGHTING

CONFLICT IN CHINA

GENERAL OFFENSIVE AGAINST REDS

BRITISH PROPERTY LOOTED

BY Telegraph.—Press Amociation. copyright. Peking. September 30. A general offensive against the Reds has commenced in the vicinity of Nanchang with the object of recapturing Hankow.

Information from the front is scarce. It is believed that fierce fighting is progressing, the results of which are distorted by the respective censors. The Reds are thought to-be receiving a set-back and retreating, shortening their lines, which haa been unwisely spread. The siege of Wuchang is weakening on account of the withdrawal, of the majority of the beseigers to meet Sun Chiiau Fang’s advance, but the predicament of the besieged is unchanged. Hundreds are dead or dying of starvation and disease. Reinforcements of the armies Opposed to the Reds, who are proceeding to Hankow to assist in its recapture and relieve Wuchang, commandeered French and American steamers. Reports are arriving daily from all sources of the looting of foreign homes. It has been ascertained that the Reds have been instructed to loot only British property.
