STEAMER ON REEF
OFF QUEENSLAND COAST Brisbane, September 9. The steamer Rio Claro, bound from New York to North Queensland ports, grounded ou Scott’s Reef, about thirty miles east of Cairns. The weather is squally, and the vessel is pounding badly amidships.- Unless she is quickly refloated, things are likely to go badly with her. [The Rio Claro is a cargo vessel of 4086 tons, built by the Blyth Shipbuilding Co. in .1922,"and owned, hv the Thompson Shipping Co.) ATTEMPTS TO REFLOAT VESSEL FAIL (Rec. September 9, 11.10 p.m.) Brisbane, September 9. Two attempts to refloat the Rio Claro have been abortive. Heavy seas are pounding the reef in . squally weather. The steamer Malabar is standing bv, and another steamer, the Rio Dorado, a sister ship of the stricken vessel, is on her way to the scene of the disaster.
