WIDOW’S PENSION

OVERPAID £478 IN FOUR YEARS BY Telegeaph.—Press association. Dargaville, September 9. Charlotte Malam,.. a widow, .was charged in the Magistrate’s Court, before Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., with receiving, during the years 1923, 1924, 1925, and 1926, a larger pension than she was justly entitled to receive. The representative of the Pensions Department stated that defendant had received payments from an estate, which she did not declare to the Pensions Board, and had been overpaid £l7B ss. 2d. The Department did not press for a heavy penalty, but the case was brought as’ a warning to others, and it would be satisfied if defendant would refund the amount overpaid. Mr. Cutten refused to order the suppression of the name, and fined defendant £2O, and ordered her to make restitution of the amount overpaid.
