JUMW COMPLETED FIRST DEMONSTRATION CONCERT The competitions, as competitions, i»?e over, and all the successful competitors are now engaged in giving demonstration concerts in the Town Hall, the first of which was held last evening before a large and appreciative audience. Miss Anita Winkei: character dance. Mr. P- Barry; .song in character. Miss Edna Purdie: cello solo, Mrs. Faller; musical monologue, Miss May McDonald; ladies duet. Misses A. Nicol and J. Miss Doris Symes (Wanganui), 95 Miss°Alice Vinsen (Christchurch). 93 “Miss Symes possesses a nch voice, sympathetic and appealing, remarked OPERATIC (OR DRAMATIC) SOLO. Tenor. Own Selection Mr. H. Phipps (Wellington), 87 points 1 Mr. E. W Robbins (Wellington). 83 Mr. P R. n Francis (Wanganui), 82 points 3 "Voice of pleasing quality, nice facial expression, has musical feeling and some temperament,” was the judge s note on Mr Phipps’s performance. He said that the selection was a very difficult one and the rendering was artistic. Mr. Robbins had a beautiful voice of some resource. VOCAL AND DRAMATIC RECITAL. Lovers of vocal, instrumental and dramatic work are promised a great treat on Tuesday and Wednesday next, when the adjudicators in music and elocution at the competitions, assisted by Madame Bennett North and Mrs. John H. Hopkins, will present unique programmes. Among the items presented will be Old English songs, operatic arias, a song cycle, "Over the Rim of the Moon/’ by Michael Head. The Sydney “Telegraph” says Madame Bennett North is Sydney’s most talented contralto. Mf. and Mrs. Hopkins will present scenes from Shakespeare, dramatic and humorous recitations, and humorous child impersonations, etc. The "Tasmanian Mail, referring to Mr. and Mrs. Hopkins, says: "Masters of their art, they held the audience enthralled.”
