MASTERTON A. AND P. ASSOCIATION MEETING OF GENERAL COMMITTEE “Dominion” Special. Masterton, September 9. The monthly meeting of the Masterton A. and P. Association General Committee was held yesterday, Mr. G. H. Perry presiding. , The Masterton County Council advised that the estimated cost of forming and metalling the grass road on the southern boundary of the Solway Showgrounds was £5OO, and asked the association for favourable consideration to making a grant towards the cost. A siiib-comniittee was appointed to wait on the council in the matter. An application for the use of the ram fair ling for a sale in January, and for a stud ewe sale in the same month, was granted. Mr. W. B. Andrew, of Timaru, wrote offering a silver challenge cup, valued at ten guineas, for most points in fat lamb classes. Down cross. , Mr. J. McLean, of Martinborongh, forwarded a donation of £i to the association’s funds. A committee was set up to revise the sheep and cattle classes, and to submit a report with recommendations to the next meeting of the general committee. The president and two vice-presidents were instructed to attend a public meeting and discuss with a representative of the commercial branch of the Railways Department a proposed amendment of the Wellington-Wairarapa ’ afternoon train service. A resolution was carried supporting the nroposed alteration of the time-table. The delegates were also instructed to bring up the matter of excursion fares to agricultural snows. Five resignations were accepted. COMMUNAL FARMING FORTY-FOUR ASSOCIATIONS IN OPERATION. Some interesting particulars concerning the operations of associations under the Land Settlement Finance Act, 1909, are supplied by the Public Trustee (Mr. J. W. Matdonald in bis annual report to Parliament. “The object of the Act,” he states, "was to promote the closer settlement of land by enabling groups of purchasers to buy private freehold property for subdivision among them, and to raise the purchase money by means of a loan guaranteed by the Government. ror this purpose anv five or more persons may by agreement form an incorporated land settlement association, and may purchase in the. name of that association any estate consisting of not less than 125 acres. The agreement of purchase must comprise a scheme for the subdivision of the estate into allotments of not less than 25 acres and not more than 200 in extent, and for tho allocation of each of these allotments to ono of the purchasers at a fixed price Tile association, acting through the 1 üblic Trustee as its agent, is empowered to raise the total purchase money of tin estate by the issue of debentures under the guarantee of the Government Each purchaser gives a mortgage to the association to secure the. balance of purchase money of his allotment, together with interest on such part of the purchase money as is for the time being unpaid. ~ . CHRISTCHURCH SHOW BIG FIXTURE IN NOVEMBER. What will make the Canterbury A. and P. Association’s Show, to be held in Christchurch next November, doubly attractive is the fact that duriuv the particular period will be held Canterbury s big carnival week and the. Judging by the comprehensive arrangements being .made the Christchurch Show this year is expected to he up to the high standard of its predecessors. The show will be held on Thursday. Hunt, representing stock and station agents. Messrs. T. A. Duncan and A. Hamilton, representing producers of meat for export. SOUTH DOWN SOCIETY FIRST MEETING OF COUNCIL The first meeting of the council of the newly formed Southdown Sheep Society of New Zealand was held in Wellington on Wednesday. Mr. H. B. Stuckey (Danuevirke) presided. Tiie election of officers resulted as follow : President, Mr. H. B. Stuckey; vicepresidents, Messrs. J. Deans (South Island). James Knight (North Island); council, Messrs. W. J. Jenkins, James Stevens, H. J. Andrew, C. E. Vile, W. G. Gimblett, W. H. Buick, G. Ellis, the president and vice-presidents. Mr. W. McKenzie (Palmerston) was appointed secretary. Alterations of the rules to meet the conditions and objects of the new society were approved and ordered to be registered. SYDNEY WOOL SALES CONCLUSION OF FIRST SERIES. Sydney, September 8. The first of the series of wool sales has concluded. Keen competition ruled at late rates from all sections of the trade. Demand was very brisk in all grades, and satisfactory clearances were made. Greasy merino sold to 27|d. per lb. LONDON TALLOW SALES Messrs. Dalgety and Company. Limited, report having received -he following cablegram from their London house, under date September 8:—"Tallow: Prices nominally unchanged.” DAIRY PRODUCE MARKET The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, have received the following cablegram from their London house under date September 8:— (Last week’s prices in parentheses).: Dairy produce.—Butter: .*cw Zealand choicest, quotations irregular, 156 b. to 160 s. per cwt.
