INFLUENZA STILL ABOUT

RETURNS with cold, wet WEATHER SCHOOL ATTENDANCE STILL SUFFERING There is still a good deal of influenza colds and sickness in Wellington. A temporary improvement occurred some ten days ago, probably due to a succession of fine, mild, sunny davs, but the return of wet, cold conditions has been reflected in the health of the community. Few staffs of any numerical strength are normal, and the absentees from some of the schools range between 20 and 30 per cent. There are still many sufferers from influenza. It is the old form of “la grippe,” which becomes a deep-seated chest cold, often accompanied by a cough difficult to shake off, even when the utmost care is taken. The effect is to make the sufferer tired and lethargic, and in the general weakening of the system the heart is liable to become affected. For that reason it is said to be wise to take every precaution when convalescent, and to take complete rest in warm quarters until all is well again. POSITION EASING IN CHRISTCHURCH TWO DEATHS REPORTED. By tslegbaph.—Press Association. Christchurch, July 13.... "There is no increase in the influenza outbreak—it is easing down gradually.” That was the encouraging review of the position given to-day by the Medical Officer of Health, Dr. T. Telford. The wet morning did not prompt many of the schools to open to-day. There were five cases of pneumonic influenza and two deaths reported today. One death was in the city and the other in Riccarton. Three pneumonic cases have been reported from the city, one from Lyttelton, and one from Riccarton. This morning the secretary of the Canterbury Education Board (Mr. C. R Kirk) said that many of the schools were still closed. Fendalton probably would close to-day until the end of the week. Some of the teachers there are down with the complaint. At Sydenham only about 100 out of 1000 children attended, and both this school and Spreydon West will close down unless fine weather comes. HOSPITAL CASE TN DUNEDIN. Dunedin, July 13. One case of pneumonic influenza, a man residing in North East Valley, was admitted to hospital to-day. The position generally is not considered serious.
