London, July 12. “If what we have just heard in the paper dealing with the hand mg of meat in the typical provincial English city is true, then Britain is a century behind the time,” declared Mr. Vogwell, of Sydney, speaking at th« Sanitary Congress. Other Australians supported the view, and delegates aso agreed with tho Australian's view that no meat should bo ki’led without official inspection. Small private abattoirs should not be permitted, and food inspectors should be armed with fuller powers.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. CANTERBURY POTATO MARKET Bi Tzlegbath.—PuEss Association Christchurch, July 13. The potato market is quieter this week. On Saturday a good deal of Sydney business was transacted at up to fib 10s. for August-September delivery, the operations of several sellers covering from 600 to 700 tons. Coastal business for the same months has been transacted on the basis of £B, and for prompt £7 2s. 6d. The Kaitoke is due to sail to-morrow for Timaru and Oamaru to conclude her loading for Sydney. There are up to 25,000 sacks in store at Lyttelton, and it is considered that the Kaitoke will lift half of these. However, it is unlikely that she will take the cuantity from New Zealand previously estimated, namely, 20,000 sacks. The Wingatui picked up no potatoes from Lyttelton for the north, and the Kurow, due to sail to-morrow, will load from 3000 to 4000. The supplies going to the north this month have been light. Business with farmers at the prices offering is at a standstill, one merchant expressing it as his opinion that sales from the farm so far this month represent little more than 50,000 sacks. There is not a great deal of digging to lie done now, ana pitting is the general policy at present, BRADFORD WOOL MARKET (Rec. July 13, 8.50 p.m.) London, July 12. The Bradford wool market is very quiet, with no business, the London sales being awaited. Crossbreds are very slack. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
