WON BY 176 RUNS

WORCESTERSHIRE UNABLE TO AVOID DEFEAT GRIMMETT’S DEADLY BOWLING FOUR WICKETS GO FOR EIGHT RUNS BT Telegraph.—Press association. CoPV’iio 1 '' 1 London, July 8. When the match between the Australians and Worcestershire was resumed this morning, the weather was overcast and warm, and the wicket was soft Although Worcestershire only had two hours to bat in the second innings, they were unable to stave oft defeat, the Australians winning by 176 runs. The attendance was about 3000. Richardson and Macartney opened the attack, and the latter, with his fourth ball, dismissed Fox. Macartney was suited by the drying wicket, and obtained a big turn, but the amateurs played him safely, following his break closely. Foster was driving finely to the boundary past cover. Richardson to-day was punished, and Andrews replaced him, but Ashton and Foster batted aggressively, bringing up 100 in two hours five minutes. Grimmett replaced Macartney, and in his second over Foster was well caught at long-on. He had played an attractive innings. Ashton in the next over was caught at fine slip. Mailey then replaced Andrews, and Rogers and Bowles departed in the same over, while Mailey in the next over bowled Root with a straight ball. The innings realised 120, and occupied two hours thirtr-five minutes. Taylor. opened shakily, and should have been run out before he had opened his score. He was four times beaten bv Wilson, and then he bit out but found difficulty in getting through the close-set field. Bardsley plaved with confidence and soundness, which has characterised all his recent innings. He treated all the bowling alike,' legging, cutting, and impartially. When he had scored 35 be reached 1000 runs for the season, the first of the visiting team to do so, and was roundly applauded bv the Worcestershire team, led bv Foster. Eventually he threw away his wicket in essaying a violent drive, the board then reading 112 runs for four wickets. Richardson and Ponsford . carried on very slowlv and safely, adding 70 runs, when the innings was declared closed. Home Side's Second Strike. Onlv two hours of play were left when Worcestershire opened the second innings. Grimmett, with a V3rving break, was turning the ball well, and caused havoc among the eariv men, four wickets producing only 8 runs. Foster and Hopkins stopped the precession, and carried the score to 34 both plaving confidently. Andrews was bowling well, but without any luck, and he had troth batsmen often beaten with the ball, which kept v er Z low. Foster was out from the first ball he received from Mailey, driving it hard end low to Mailey, who made a fine catch. Root severely punished Grimmett, hitting out powerfully, Rogers following suit, hut both batsmen xvere unable to stave off defeat, the innings dosing with twenty minutes to snare.
