WORKING ON SUNDAY

CHINESE GARDENERS FINED

In the Magistrate’s Court yesterday two Chinamen, Ah Shew and Ah Low, were each convicted and fined £1 for working at their trade on a Sunday. Mr? S. Joll, who represented the defendants, said the Orientals were only clearing a dirty drain, as they had been told to do the previous Friday. “The refuse was offensive,” he added, “and they were ordered to clean it straight away. Being in a hurry to oblige, they therefore kept at work on Sunday, and were doing the drain when the policeman saw them.”, “Nothing of the kindl” interjected SuMnspector Harvey; “Constable Knotts saw them digging in tbe garden.” &

“Oh, well, I didn’t know that,” replied Mr. Joll. “The Chinese state they were only clearing a drain. I am instructed to say so.” Besides the fine, the defendants were also ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution. ,
