WINTER RACES

KAPIER WINS PARLIAMENTARY HANDICAP KING LU TAKES THE SPRINT

(By

“The Watcher.")

The second day of the Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting was held at Trentham yesterday under ideal conditions. It was a day devoted practically to flat racing. Rapier who had won the Whyte Memorial the first day scored again in the principal handicap, the Parliamentary, winning as only a good horse could from Olympic and Tanadees. The rank outsiders King Lu and Master Doon filled the major places in the Members Handicap in front of Beaumont, and in the majority of the other events there were also good dividends recorded. Favourites won three races. Comical repeated his victory of twelve months ago in the Highweight Handicap. The totalisator again showed a substantial increase on the corresponding day last year.

The weather could hardly, have been improved upon and the slight breeze that {prevailed dried the track and enclosures, although the going was still holding. Only a good horse could hare won the Parliamentary Handicap as Rapier did. He was oue of the first away, bgt Olympic soon went to the front and established a comfortable lead, making everything carry the weight. As 6hey entered the straight Olympic was four or five lengths clear and still going well but Rapier, settling down to his task like a champion, gradually overhauled him and in most courageous fashion settled the issue. A great surprise was sprung by King Lu and Master Doon in tire Members’ Handicap. Until the final stages it loked as if the well-backed division were going to divide the money, but over the last bit the pair of outsiders named simply romped home. Wedding March again won the Hack Hurdles and proved himself a good one, but the jumping in the Hack Steeplechase was not very good, half the field coining to grief. They included tlie 1 favourite Merry Singer, who was going well in a prominent position at the time. The riders were not hurt, but A. Weaver, the rider of Kaipikari, was rather badly shaken. Comical was a class above the runners in the Highweight Handicap and scored easily at the finish. Trentham horses again ran prominently, and secured two wins, a second and a third. One of the winner, Jubilance, paid the best price of the two days. Ruffles proved himself a very smart sort by taking the Hack Scurry in easy style. He was the hottest favourite of the day. The attendance, which again included the Vice-Regal party was excellent. The gates for both days are in excess of the corresponding days last year, and the investments were £46,680 as against J=s.ts'- 10s. on the second day twelve months ago, an increase of £8940 10s. With two days concluded the investments are £1.5,251 in advance of the two days of the last winter meeting. CORUNNA HURDLES. The first day's winner, Wedding March, bracketed with Tinohoro, was again favourite for the hack hurdles, carrying over £4OO more than Pofoanui, the second favourite. Protection and Alaric were the best backed of the others. Prince Ferouz got a bad start, losing many lengths. Star Shell led through the straight, followed by Royal Form, Projector, Slump and .Toy Ride. Royal Form took the lead down the back stretch, with Projector. Potoanui, Star Shell, Tinohoro, and Wedding March together. At the top Potoanui and Royal Form led Wedding March. Projection, and Joy Ride. Wedding March and Potoanui were together at the . second to last hurdle, the former leading into the straight. Wedding March came on to win by two lengths from Potoanui, with Slump five lengths further hack third, followed by Tiuoboro, Glument, Royal Form, Joy Ride, Prince Ferouz. Potoanui did not jump overwell or he would have made if harder for the winner, who is undoubtedly good. Joy Ride and .Royal Form ran improved races, but Alaric was very disappointing. He hardly jumped a fence correctly. MAIDEN HANDICAP. Pangolin was a slightly better favourite for the Maiden Handicap than the bracketed pair, Llandudno and Mint Julep. Waterlow and Schorr were tho only others to carry much support. Pangolin got left badly at the start. Schorr, Serotina, and Waterlow were tho first to show out. Schorr and Hypnotic led on to tho course proper, with Waterlow and Hilcullus in close attendance. At tho distance Town Crier camo away and won comfortably from Mister Gamp by two lengths. Waterlow cut Schorr out of third money by a length, and two lengths further back came Girribillie, Llandudno, Hilcullus. and Hypnotic heading the bunch. Everything except Pangolin had l every chance. MEMBERS’ HANDICAP. Mireusonta, Hoariri, Merry Damns, and Nino of Spades were all solidly backed for the Members’ Handicap. They all showed up prominently in the early stages, but over the last furlong two absolute outsiders came to_ the front, and left them standing. Mireusonta, Nine of Spades, Master Doon, and Merry Damon wore first to show out, the order into the straight being Mireusonfa, Nine of Spades, Master Doon. Tloariri, and I,adv Fingers. Once in lino Master Doon came on. followed by King Ln. tho latter winning by a length from Master Doon, who beat Beaumont by two lengths. Archeen was a head away fourth, and then followed Hoariri. Merry Damon, Royal Diadem, and Mircnsonia. SECOND HACK STEEPLECHASE Merrv Singer wits a solid favourite from Hokioi and Eonmark for the sec-

ond Hack Steeplechase. Out of the eight starters only lour stood up, one of those to fall being the favourite, when ho was going well in a good position. Eonmark jumped out in front from the start and was well in trout at the sod wall where Kaipikari fell. Eonmark and Merry Singer beaded tho bunch at the top, North Inch falling at tho broad fence at the five furlong post. Birkenose came to grief at trio board fence at the bottom of the straight, leaving Eonmark to show Hypothesis Merry Singer, Hokioi and Lady Comet through the straight. Hypothesis led over the double in front of the grand stand, followed by Eonmark, Hokioi, Merry Singer and Lady Comet. Down the back tho second time Hypothesis was live lengths in front of Eonmark but. Merry Singer went up fast to second place only to fall at tie log fence, leaving Hypothesis to lead out of tho back stretch from Lady Cornet, Eonmark and Hokioi. Ladv Comet joined Hypothesis turning into the straight but lost ground through making a bad jump at the boards, Hypothesis then led her into the straight by three lengths, but she was just behind Hypothesis as they went at the 'ast jump and came away in an exciting finish to win by a head. Hokioi was 30 yards further back third, and Eonmark, (he only other to finish, was 20 yards further away. PARHAMENTARY HANDICAP. Tanadees and Passionate disputed favouritism for the best part ot tho time, when tho maelrins was open, but at the finish solid support came for Rapier, mid ho was £2OO better backed than Tanadees. Alter then Passionate and Kilia were the beat backed, tho majority going out at big prices. Thursby, Eilia, Sir Pam, and Passionate were badly away at the start. Rapier led out of the straight, followed by Kilia, Roues and Tanadees, but past the mile post the order was Olympic, Rouex, Rapier, and Tanadees. Olympic led past the five furlong post from Rouex, Captain Gazeley, Sir Paun, Passionate, and Rapier. Across the top Olympic led from Roues by two lengths, followed . .by Rivalry, Sir Pam, Rapier, and Tanadees. Olympic had increased his lead to four lengths from Rouex, Rivalry, Rapier, and Tanadees into tho straight, where Rapier came with a hot challenge. He drew level with 100 yards to go, and went on to win by nearly a length. Tanadees was four lengths further”back third. Passionate was fourth, three lengths behind Tanadees, and then followed Rouex, Tamo Fox, Diamond Ring, Kilia, and Arch Salute. Tho winner's performance stamps him as a horse of solid qualities; in fact, he had to be much above the ordinary to catch anti beat Olympic over tho last furlong, and he finished very courageously. HIGH WEIGHT HANDICAP San Fcra was favourite for the High Weight Handicap carrying over £3OO more than Comical. Curcaform and Our Jako were the best backed of the others. Greekson, Catcall and Kendall led out of the straight, the last being Santiago. When they settled down the order was Grcekson, Cat Call, Kendall, San Fera, Braeman and Black Cruiser, and down the back Grcekson led Kendall, Cat Call, Lady Gay and San Fora. Greekson was" still in the lead as the field crossed the top, followed by Lady Gay, Cat Call and Kendall, with Lucullent and San Fera next. Greokson and Lady Gay led into the straight from S'an Fera, Lucullent, Kilmiss and Braeman. Once in line Comical asserted his class and came up to win by a length and a half, while Lady Gay beat San Fcra for second place by a head. Braeman was a length away vvitlr Crown Coin close up. After a gap came Black Cruiser, Lucullent, Greckson irnd Curenform. Comical won this event last year. SEATOUN. HANDICAP Sir Moment was a solid favourite, for the Seatoun Handicap, Mountain Jean, Elysianor, Tannadice and Gardant also being well backed. Black Rock headed the bunch from tho start, followed by Elysianor. Jubilance and Tannadice. Across the top tho order was': Black Rock. Elysianor. Nucleus and Gardant, Jubilant having got knocked back. Black Rock led into, the straight from Elysianor, Gardant, Nucleus and Merle, but Jubilance came with a great run from the distance to win by three-quarters of a length from Nnsleus, who beat Sir Moment by a neck for third money. Merle was" fourth, and then came Elysianor and Gardant. Tho winner paid the best nrice of the two days and was responsible for a good performance, ns she was interfered with after going two furlongs. T’ETONE HANDICAP. Ruffles was a hot favourite for the concluding event. Joy Bird and Cultivation were the first to show out, but once in tho straight Ruffles came away to win easily by two lengths from Lady Ideal, who was a neck in front of Sartv. Then followed Cultivation, Joy Bird, Girribillie and Pinon. Girribillie was loft at the Start and did well to finish so close up. Ruffles scored a very easy victory.
