THE RACING WORLD

NAPIER PARK MEETING PARK STEEPLECHASE TO PASSIN’ THROUGH BRIGADIER BILL SCORES IN PORAITI HURDLES The winter meeting of the Napier Park Racing Club was concluded to-day in glorious weather on a track in fine order and in the presence of a large attendance. There was some very good racing throughout the day. Passin. Through, with a change of riders, reversed his first day’s form in the Steeplechase and won from Lady Comet, who also had a change of jockeys and benefited materially thereby; Ranui was third. In the Poraiti Hurdles Brigadier Bill won narrowly from Merry Singer with Santiago third. The winner had to undergo an inquiry on account of bumping Merry Singer in the run home, but as it was quite obvious that it did not affect the result and was due to running in under the whip the stewards did not take long to decide that the judge’s verdict should stand. Tuahine won the principal flat event from Royal Diadem and Beaumont.

Iu connection with the principal flat handicaps of this meeting, it is worthy of note that Olvmpic did not start either day. This was due to an irregularity in his nomination. It would appear that he w.as raced on lease by Messrs. McLennan Brothers, who purchased him on the expiry of the lease, lhey failed, however, to register the partnership, and consequently Olympic could not start. He should not have been allowed to appear in the acceptances for the second day, and his nominations for events at Hastings are also out of court. . , With the wins of Ruby Ring and Brigadier Bill, Mr. J. BuU, who had won with Ngata the first day, had a good, meeting R. Reed rode tw.o winners during the day, and appears to have placed the jockey premiership beyond doubt for the expiring season. The totalisator handled £14,449, making a total of £26,559 for the meeting compared with £22,412 for last year, an increase of £4147. HUNT CLUB STEEPLECHASE. Silent Dick and Guanaco shared the favouritism hi the Hunt Club Steeplechase, there being a fair amount of support for Bowden’s mount Kirkwood and Silent Dick set out to make the pace from Supporter, but he never got far away, and Supporter had him beaten about six ■ furlongs from home. Over Hie last half Kirkwood joined Supporter, and eventually beat him home oy a length, with Silent Dick twelve lengths back, and Mahia next. Aotearoa- was the only other to finish, Kyoto falling at the second fence and bringing down Kovno, and dislodging the rider ,A. McDonald) of Gupnaco. E. Warner, who ride Kovno, was not injured. MEEANEE HANDICAP. Polar was a firm favourite for the Hack Scurry from Essential and Coot. The favourite was slow to get going, Three Kings, -Essential, ’and Coot comprising the leading division to the turn, when Tino Maunga had also become prominent Polar moved up entering the straight, where Essential and Coot were leading. Settling down to galloping iu earnest, Polar came on to win well by a length from Essential, who beat Jen by two lengths. Close up were lino Maunga, Coot, and Break-o’-Day. The winner is a good hack to get home like he did after his slow start. WAIOHIKI HACK HURDLES. Mangatoetoe and Reliutai were solidly backed for the Hack Hurdles. Royal Heather. Polyastra, and .Mangatoetoe led from Rugby Ring, and Reliutai in the early stages. Down the back Royal Heather and Polyastra led Mangatoetoe and Ruby Ring. Mangatoetoe dropped back at the half-mile, Rugby Ring and Revel going up to the leaders. Ruby Ring led into the straight and over the last hurdle, and beat Revel by a neck. Maugatoetoe, who finished on again, was a couple of lengths away, and after an interval came Reliutai, who had faded out with six furlongs to go, and Royal Heather. Ruby Ring was ridden in behind to-day and ran better. The second horse was giving his supporters a sensational return for a win. WINTER OATS HANDICAP. Tuahine was favourite for the Winter Oats, with Huikai and Royal Diadem almost as well backed. Beaumont was next in favour. Huikai, Jeannette, and Beaumont moved first, and Huikai led to the turn, where Startle had run up, followed by Koodoo. Startle led round the bend from Huikai, Koodoo, Royal Diadem, Beaumont, and Tuahine. Huikai and Royal Diadem headed Startle into the straight, where Tuahine challenged the others to be prominent, including Beaumont, Koodoo, Road Hog, and Wristlet. Over the last bit Reed drove Tuahine along and she cut down the leaders to win by half a length from Royal Diadem, who beat Beaumont by the same margin. Sir Pam was a length oft, with Road Hog, Morose, Huikai, and Hillation all close up.

PARK STEEPLECHASE HANDICAP. Bonny Rill and Woden were the favourites for the Park Steeplechase, but there was plenty of support tor Passin’ Through, who had a change of riders, W. Rennie being up. Lady Comet, who could not jump a fence yesterday, also bad another rider, E. Warner,, and it was remarkable what a wide difference there was in the form of the pair as compared with their first day’s efforts. Ranui made the pace from Red Cent, Passin' Through, Lady Comet, and Bonny Rill, Woden having run off at the first fence. There was little change in the running throughout, except that the field was well bunched. Throughout the last mile and a quarter two or three bad jumps cost Bonnv Rill her chance. Over the last half Passin’ Through and Lady Comet drew out, the former winning

by a couple of lengths, with Ranui three lengths behind Lady Comet. Red Cent was next at an interval. Velvet King fell at the stand double the first time, and Bonny Rill at the last fence. No riders were injured. PORAITE HURDLES. Highway was a solid favourite for the Poraite Hurdles from Koaaau and Brigadier Bill. The favourite faltered for a mile, when he was beaten, but he ran a fair race. Merry Singer gained two or three lengths’ advantage at the start and led all the way round from Eonmark, Highway, and Brigadier Bill. On the home turn Brigadier Bill ran up to Merry Singer, with Santiago, Good Sport, Eonmark, and Highway following. The leading pair jumped the last fence together, and in a bumping finish Brigadier Bill got home from Merry Singer by the best part of a length. Santiago ran on into third place, a couple of lengths off, and then came Highway, Eonmark, Good Sport, and Koauau’ An inquiry was instituted into the bumping between Brigadier Bill and Merry Singer in the run home It was found that there had been interference, but in the opinion of the Stewards it was insufficient to cause an alteration in the judge’s placings. NEWSTEAD HACK HANDICAP. Mime, Cohesion, and Watchman, on whom R. Reed got up, were solidly backed for the concluding event. Blue Jay got left at the post. Jubilee was the pilot to the turn, where Watchman took charge and led round from Cohesion, ' Jubilee, Mah Jong, and Benannee When in line Watchman came on and won bv half a length from Cohesion, who beat Benannee by a length. Patutahi and Mime were close up. DETAILS OF THE RACING HUNT CLUB STEEPLECHASE, of 105 sovs., and cup valued 20 cruineas. For qualified hunters. Two miles. 3 Mr. F. Ormond’s br. g.
