RUNAWAY MOTOR CAR

BOLTS DOWN A HILL . Residents in the vicinity of the Terrace, near Bolton Street, received rather a shock on Saturday night, when about 10 o’clock a deafening crash, accompanied bv a splintering of woodwork and glass, told them that something unusual had happened in their locality. In a moment, or two people were out of bed, and with many others rushed quickly towards the residence of Dr. W. E. Herbert, who occupies the house at the corner of the two streets. On arrival it was discovered that a runaway motor had been responsible for the damage, for after smashing through a fence and tearing away over thirty feet of palings, a vehicle could be seen lying on its side in Dr. Herbert’s garden. It appears that the car was left standing at the top of Bolton Street (one of the steepest.inclines in Wellington), when it suddenly bolted and got away down the hill, getting up terrific speed as it neared the terrace; It swerved tp the left just as the corner was reached and went hurtling through the fence of Dr. Herbert’s house, tearing every think away before it. Luckilv the vehicle was only a small one, otherwise it would have done much more damage. After inquiries had been made, and the owner of the car (who came running after his machine down the hill) had given an explanation, the vehicle was towed away from the scene of the accident, little the worse for the adventure.
