AN ELEPHANT SEAL

CAPTURED AT AUCKLAND “Dominion” Special. Auckland, June 20. An elephant seal, 10 feet long, with a girth of about 4 feet, and weighing hail a ton, was captured at the back of Messrs. Wright, Stephenson and Co.’s fertiliser works at Otahuhu to-day. lhe elephant seal is a unique, visitor in the north, its home being in the colder waters. It is larger than ordinary seals, and more ferocious, and the specimen captured to-dav gave its captors a lively time before it was finally placed on a lorry and taken to the Auckland Zoo seal pond. An attempt to lift the seal on to the lorrv in n tarpaulin failed, and the tarpaulin suffered severely from the teeth of the seal. At length the transfer to the lorry was effected by the use of a strong net, in which the became hopeleMly tangled.
