PLAY NOT UP TO USUAL STANDARD ANOTHER WIN FOR HUTT With a lead of two points, Hutt bead the senior A grade competition of the Wellington Hockey Association. Hutt had to light hard for their victory against Wesley on Saturday, and but for g<x>d work by the former’s backs, a different tale might have been told. The contest was not productive of spectacular hockey. Both teams displayed ragged combination, and, in that respect, the majority of the teams in both senior grades could have shown an improvement. The reason for play not being up to the usual standard is due to the several postponements occasioned by the visit of the Indian team. At Karon Park, Wellington iseeured a decisive win over Wakatu, while Karori defeated ’Varsity by a narrow margin after an entertaining, although not a brilliant, game.

HUTT v. WESLEY. . Luck was not altogether absent from Hutt in their match with Wesley, for on the run of play, a draw, perhaps, would have been a Utting result. In the early stages of the game it appeared as though Wesley were going to spring a surprise. Their passing rushes at times were commendable, but the Hutt backs took no chances. The first score came when Smith, Hutt's left wing, broke away, and gave his team a line opportunity to score. His shot at the net was saved in the nick of time, but R. Lusty caught the ball on the rebound, and Boyes (the custodian) was taken by surprise. Hutt 1, Wesley 0. Wesley were called upon to defend shortly afterwards, and in attempt to save a goal shot Gardiner, was injured, and had to retire. Playing with ten men, Wesley were hard pressed at times, but put up a plujky fight, and gave their opponents some anxious moments. Half-time saw ro alteration in the scores. For some time after the interval there was no score, both teams playing a very even game. The H”tt forwards eventually penetrated their opponents’ defence, and play was taken to the circle, where R. Lusty banged the ball into the net. Boyes kicked the ball out, but Dillon < aught the rebound, and scored. Hutt 2, Wesley Q. No further score was registered. Mr, H. Hatch was referee. KARORI V. WARSITY. Considerable interest was taken in the Karori-’Varsity fixture, the scores re-

presenting fairly well the respective merits or the skies. From the word "go” the game was keenly contested, but both teams were not up to their usual standard, consequently their movements lacked finish. Spiers played a bright game and shortly after the commencement gave his forward line a chance to break through. Roberts and Cooper took up the attack, which was checked just in time by K. James, 'Varsity’s left full-back. Karori continued to worry their opponents. Perrin centred to Blundell, who found the net with a fine shot. Karori 1, 'Varsity 0. Spurred by the reverse, the collegians attacked vigorously, but the tide soon turned, and a good shot by Heaphy saw another goal recorded against them Karori 2, 'Varsity 0. 'Varsity’s chanct ' camo a moment later, Simpson netting. Karori 2, 'Varsity 1. Cooper scored again for the home team just on halftime. Karori 3, Varsity 1. The second naif was interesting an<l oft-times bright, but Karori's combination was too strong for their opponents. Karon secured another goal from the stick of Blundell, while McT,eod netted for ’Varsity. Karori 4, 'Varsity 2. Mr. R. P. Staples v/a? referee. WELLINGTON V. WAKATU. A one-sided game describes the Wei-lington-Wakatu rixtuie. Wakatu, playing two men short, were continually defending, and but for excellent work by W. Hood, who intercepted time and again, the score would have been much greater. Jacobsen and Joblin were the outstanding players for Wellington, while Holland, a young player from .Auckland, who has just joined the ebtb, was also a tower of strength. The

last-named secured three of the six goals registered by Wellington. Armstrong, who was always prominent, was responsible for an equal number of goals. The Wakatu 'keeper (Cochrane) acquitted himself creditably despite the heavy scoring. Lawry and Hood .were the scorers for Wakatu. The game ended: Wellington'o, Wakatu 2. Mr. A. W. Thomas was referee. SENIOR B GRADE. Training College had things just to their liking in their gamb against Wellington, and rattled on 8 goals to their opponents' solitary 1. Wellington, with only ten men, played a ragged game throughout, and invariably lost the ball by too strenuous forward passing. In the first spell Training College secured three of their goals, Sykes (2) and Ferris netting, to their opponents’ one and only goal, scored by Fitzjones. After the interval "the collegians met with little opposition, Frazer (3), Sykes and Irwin scoring. Training College 8, Wellington 1. Mr. J. W. Russell was referee.

Karori and Hutt fought out a very even game at the Hutt Recreation ground. The home team’s display was not very impressive. Karori, with one man short, played stubbornly throughout. It was only in the concluding stages of the game that a score was made by Lewer for Karori. Gwilliam and Judd played well for Hutt, while Henderson and King were always prominent for the visitors. The game ended: Karori 1. Hutt 0. Mr. R. Lloyd refereed.

Huia defeated Petone by 2 goals to 1, after a very ragged and uninteresting performance., Yates scored both goals for Huia. Lindop secured Petone’s goal. Y.M.C.A. secured a decisive victory over Wesley, the latter’s combination being very weak. In the early stages of the game Y.M.C.A. took play to the Wesley circle, where Wadham netted. Y.M.C.A. 1, Wesley 0. In the subsequent play Wesley men were outclassed and before the game ended Fergusson (5), and Anderson netted. Y.M.C.A. 7, Wesley 0. Mr. W. A. Soctt was referee.

INDIANS WIN AGAIN STRONG OTAGO TEAM , BEATEN By Telegbaph.—Press association . Dunedin, June 19. In glorious sunshine twelve thousand persons witnessed the hockey match, Indian Army v. Otago, at the Carisbroqk ground, which was dry and fast. Tlie home team was considered a good side and had trained assiduously for the encounter, but though individually and in team work there was little to find fault with, they were almost continually on the defence in the face of the quickness and cleverness of the visiting eleven. Messrs. J. Starr and >S. Holland were the referees. The Indian Army team won by 11 goals to 0. A curious circumstance was the scoring by the white members of the team of nine out of the eleven goals. .Many of them were the results of opportunities made bv their Indian compatriots. Otago won the toss and India faced the glare of the sun. Otago opened with a sensational run which nearly brought a score, but the visitors promptly returned, ajid Dhian Chand struck an upright from a difficult angle. The Indians maintained a heavy pressure and Susainathan goaled neatly from short range. The local backs resisted stoutly, but rarely pressed beyond halfway. Neat work towards the goal by Dhian Chand ended in a transfer to Belchamber, who scored easily. Otago broke through with a massive advance, and Dhian Singh cleared from Johnston in the nick of time. The visitors immediately changed back and Belchamber scored again. Otago now attacked nnd the visitors’ goalie had twice to boot out. The Indians by clever passing pressed again, and Cox with a splendid long drive found the net. India 4, Otago 0. The visitors were attacking at half-time. The sun did not trouble Otago on changing over. The visitors opened sensationally, notching two goals in three minutes. Belchamber and Cox were tho successful players. Playing with uncanny accuracy, India hovered around Otago’s area, wnere Davies, the local custodian, thrice saved brilliantly. For a brief Feriod Otago took command and the ndian goalie was brought out several times in anxious defence. The visitors, however, were too clever and Cox added two. Belchamber two and Dhian Chand one. India 11, Otago 0. A civic reception was accorded the visiting team in the morning, and after the match they were entertained at a dinner.

As a curtain-raiser to the India-Otago match, the Otago and Southland ladies’ representative teams tried conclusions. Southland showed to advantage in the first half and Otago in the second. The game was drawn, two goals each being an appropriate result.
