MARRIAGE FAILURES
An interesting analysis of divorce figures for the last thirty years in the Connecticut town of New Haven has been compiled by the Divinity School of Yale University. The figures indicate that the speeding up of modern life, with its increasing emancipation of women, its motorcars, wireless telephone and "tubes” has caused more married couples, to break down under the .strain and seek their freedom. About 60 per cent, of those who sue for divorce are the wives, this proportion having been maintained steadily for years, despite the rising number of cases in the court dockets.
Approximately 75 per cent, of the suits brought by both sexes are on the ground of desertion, 10 per cent, on the ground of infidelity, 10 per cent, on the basis of intolerable cruelty, and 5 per- cent, on the ground of drunkenness.
The investigation shows that the average suit for divorce is the outcome of years of dissatisfaction. The increased number of those seeking divorce is largely attributed to the modern tendency to face facts, rather than hide from them, and a growing disposition to'think more of realities and less of the alleged "disgrace” which was formerly held to attach to all parties concerned in the suits.
