INTOXICATED MOTORIST FINED
_4 — A MINOR PENALTY INFLICTED. “You must know that driving a motor-car while in a state of intoxication is always visited by a severe penalty. Apparently you usually keep sober, but you were drunk on this occasion, and a menace to the public. Not a day goes past without reports of motor accidents appearing in the Press. However, I 'will take into consideration your genera] sobriety. Yon will be convicted and fined £lO with costs.” These remarks were made by Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday to Frederick Herring, who appeared on the charge of being found in charge of a motorcar while in an intoxicated condition. Sub-Inspector Harvey said that the accused had run into a woman on Lambton Quay on Saturday. She was still under medical treatment. Herring had been arrested when he stopped the car, as he was seen to be under the effects of liquor.
Mr. C. B. O’Donnell said that Herring was 45 years old, and had never been in Court before. He had taken a few drinks with some old friends, and the liquor had gone to his head. He also stated that Herring never drank as a rule. “Most people think he is a teetotaller,” he added.
Sub-Inspector Harvey asked if the Magistrate would endorse Herring’s license. Mr. Riddell: No, seeing that it Is his first offence I will not take it away.
