“FAUST” IN MODERN DRESS
, * PRODUCED IN BERLIN THEATRE. (Rec. April 9, 7.45 p.m.) ’ Berlin, April 9. Following a production of "Hamlet" in modern dress in London, the Volksbuhue Theatre, Berlin, has presented Goethe’s “Faust,” eliminating medievalism. Faust is robed as a university proctor or wears a dinner jacket. Mephistoplieles waves an opera hat at the widow Martha Gretchen’s home, which is a modern suburban villa. Critics express the opinion that the Gretchen tragedv is thus robbed of its ethical foundation, as it deals with problems of a definite historical period, unlike “Hamlet,” which is timeless in subject matter. —Aus.-N.Z.
