DEATH OF DR. AXHAM
BEFORE REINSTATEMENT EFFECTED LONDON PRESS INDIGNANT London, April 8. The death is announced of Dr. Frederick William Axham, aged 86. Realising on Tuesday that his end was near, Dr. Axham asked that his fiiends be given a message for publication after his death. “God forgive all,” he said. "For myself I forgive, as I hope to be forgiven.” The Press is most indignant that the Medical Council’s ban had not been lifted before his death, one of the headlines making the announcement, “Axham Dies an Outlaw.” —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. [Dr. Axham was suspended by the British medical authorities in 1912 because he had assisted Sir Herbert Barker (then Mr.), the famous, manipulative surgeon, by administering an anaesthetic while Sir Herbert was operating, the latter having no medical degree. Dr. Axham’s case later aroused much discussion in the newspapers, the public considering that he was unjustly treated, especially as Sir Herbert Barker had been knighted. By a majority the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh decided on January 20 of this year to terminate the suspension of Dr. Axham, but the reinstatement was still held up at the time cf the doctor’s death.]
